I have 2 questions on a 69 S4 dhc that I need help with;

1) I have the windscreen out of the car and also had the crash-pad out and re-upholstered. Should I install the winshcreen first, then the pad or the other way around?

2) Can anyone identify the item below? I think it came from under the steering area or the dash?

This is one of the infamous bobbins that are moulded into the body as a fixing point. It could be one of the facia fixing points if it came from behind the dash.
You will need to look for a depression in the bodywork that has the outside shape of the bobbin (mirror and torch job), and then glue it back into position.

Its approx 1/8 thick. I just posted another picture. I can see why you would say bobbin from the angle on the first picture.

Put the crash pad in 1st, because you must install the interior windscreen post covers at the same time you install the windscreen rubber. That's essentially what holds it into the car.

If the car is a DHC, install the Tenax fastener for the tonneau cover that is just below the corner of the screen before you install either the screen or the crash pad, since you need the screen post covers to be removed to have access to the nut on the back of the Tenax.

I'm usually very good at Elan parts ID, but what you have must be some sort of a shim washer. Could it be from inside the door to shim the window frame position. I don't know why it has to have the bobbin oval shape. My S3's just use round washers glued together.

dont know if it is or not, but it may have come from upper handbrake mounting bolt....my plus 2 had something like that between the ally spacer tube and bulkhead to spread the load on the fibreglass...

Your added picture shows that I have no idea what it is.

Could it be a washer from the bottom of the windshield steady/rear view mirror rod?

Maybe a washer/spacer used in the fitment of a radio?

That sort of rings a bell in my head too, but I can't even find the tensioner rod in the parts book so am unable to say yay or nay I'm afraid.

Can't think why it would need to be that shape anyway.

Somebody on here must have a Type 45 in pieces? ...............

I have a feeling that this was a fixer-upper part to be used when the thread in a glassed-in bobbin had stripped. One used this as a "load-spreading washer".

I could be wrong- usually am.

My 45 (built Dec 1969) is completely apart and all the nuts, bolts, and washers are in one can, and I cannot find this one.
