Wow Paul, glad to see no one got hurt. Hard to believe. It looked as if the BMW? (red car) driver could have had a heart attack, or something, to keep drifting to the left, off the pavement.

No heart attack - I don't think he (it was a BMW) realised I was so far alongside. Not sure why he didn't turn away after we touched but there you go....

Just realised, the car is the red Elan #6 in Pete's photos in this string from Oulton. I still own it, but it's raced by Larry Kennedy at the moment.

I put the video up because of the Harrington discussion. It took me a long time to figure out what it was that I was chasing.

I've been playing about with film again this year and have developed my first rolls for 30+ years!

This is from Oulton Park back in March.

Now that is a well set up Elan

Front and rear nicely balanced on the outside with no squat or dive (well maybe a little nose down but not much) in what is obviously a hard corner and the front inside wheel just off the ground a fraction. Maybe stiffen the front or soften the rear just a little

You are really down to personal preferences when it looks this good and its what you need aim for

I would be interested to know the acual suspension set up for the car

Rohan, there is a small dip in the road at Lodge Corner where the road just drops briefly from under the wheel, only for split second. Having watched Elans racing at Oulton for some little(!) time one can tell what is sorted and what is not by the cars attitude at various points around the circuit. I agree with you this is right at the top end of the scale.
I think that it is the ex-Jackie Oliver car (Dave Hughes will know) if so, it was for sale last year at 175,000 GBP.
Micheal Schryver/Simon Hadfield were down to drive, according to the prog.

Again this is for those who like this sort of thing - I raced at Brands in the Historic Roadsports ByBox meeting and have posted the in car video in the link below. The race was also covered on Motors TV. (if this isn't your bag, then just skip on past this post!)

To set the scene, I decided to try out some Toyo 888 tyres as opposed to the Yokohama A048 that we normally run. The upshot is that the tyres have good grip but a weak carcass (in my opinion) so that as you can see it was quite difficult to drive with a very squirmy front end!


I was on pole but as expected I was beaten off the line by a well driven Griffith (Mathew Truelove) and couldn't get past him on the twisty bits and then was left for dead on the straights. Behind me (most of the time) I had Dave Randall in his G4 Ginetta which meant that I had to defend on the very bits where I wanted to attack.

Plenty of other nice cars out there - 5 Elans and a Plus 2.

For any of you that race in UK, Historic Roadsports with the HSCC really is tremendous fun with highly competitive close racing - and generally done in gentlemanly fashion.

I've attached a pic that shows the action but is from a long way off - anyone got some better photos?

Paul, that video is awesome. At 3.20 I saw a Senna/Prost moment coming, fortunately the TVR driver saw you & gave you (a little) room.

I'd love to see it from the Ginetta's point of view! - especially the "tight" bit through the backmarkers.

In historic roadsports we run a variety of classes from Midgets and Turners through Porsche 911's, TVR's, Morgans and even a DeThomaso Mangusta! We get awarded points for how we do in our class and then also fight for getting onto the various steps of the podium.

So, my main championship contender this season on points was a Porsche 911 that I routinely lap, but he scores maximum points because he wins his class. It works well and allows David vs Goliath contests and plenty of track action. And actually the ?lan is normally right at the front regardless of the cubes of the opposition - I've had six outright wins this season and a couple of very close second places. It's all great fun and beyond my boyhood dreams!

I started by doing a couple of track days and then thought 5 years ago that it would be more fun to race.

The G4 did have a camera but I haven't seen the video yet. I do have a DVD from the outside and it was all quite tight through the backmarkers - if I can figure out how to put a clip on you tube I will.
