Oh dear! Looks like we shall have to be satisfied with an Elan only parking area at the Festival of Speed then, instead.

So if we don't have an Elan only race at Goodwood, where else do people fancy? Bear in mind Paul Matty is organising something at Shelsley and we hope to have a big presence at the Silverstone Classic. We could ask for a race there of course.

In principle I would like such a race to be at an open classic event, the better to show off the Elan to other enthusiasts! In many ways it would be too easy to lay on a race at a Club Lotus gathering and anyway we can do that anytime. What are your views on this?

Why am I getting the impression that this is all the subject of wishful thinking on our behalf?
In order to stage an all Elan race, regardless of where/when it happens, it depends on the guys who actually race these cars.
So far I've not seen too much input from them here on the subject.

Perhaps a preliminary entry list of cars/drivers exists, if so perhaps more inspired thinking could be drawn from us non-racers.

Seems like the choice of events is becoming confusing!

If you go back to page one of this thread you will see that there were several expressions of interest in an Elan only race. I also spoke to Dave who told me that he felt he would have no problem getting some 20 Elans onto the grid, the vast majority genuine 26Rs, with a few period GTSs.

Regarding dilution, I'm not too worried about that. We can not, and indeed do not, wish to control how many events, what type of events or where they are. I'm sure there will be a good number of various events put together by a number of Elan enthusiasts during the course of next year. We as CLES are looking primarily at organising one event, where we would hope to attract as many Elans as possible. The Silverstone Classic looks like being the best compromise in terms of date and location, so provided the circuit is happy, we shall put our efforts into that in the hope it becomes the memorable 50th celebration.

In the same way, we can not 'control' what might be written about the Elan by the car mags. We know that several items may well repeat old fables, get some facts wrong and perhaps lack any new angles. I hope that we shall be equally pleased with those articles which are appealing and factually right.

Thanks for that Tim,

I also think that Silverstone would be more satisfactory than having to bend over backwards in an attempt to talk the tweedy trilby brigade at Goodwood into "accepting" such an event.

The all Elan race will be something to look forward to & I hope you will keep us posted on how the entry list is looking & keep the subject "on the boil"

I would suggest pushing for the Silverstone Classic. HSCC organizes it and therefore has some influence. We could then race roadsports and FIA appendix K. Grid size is around 58 - I think the organizers would be nervous as to whether that many Elans would turn up to race?

How many of us are there who would do it?

A quick update on 2012. It looks like the Silverstone Classic will be the event where we celebrate the Elans 50th in a big and meaningful way. I am therefore going to start a new thread (Right Side of Pond: Elan 50th Celebrations Silverstone Classic), the better for us to talk specifically about it.

Dave and other 26R and period GTS owners - we are pushing for an Elan only race at Silverstone during this event and hope that you will all feel able to support it; it should be a great spectacle!
