Matthijs67 wrote:Thanks for all the info. I was also confronted with the same Elan offered for sale in the Netherlands, Portugal, France etc by Anna Doblof:

http://auto.marktplaza.nl/lotus/Lotus-Elan-S2-1600-22993775.htm

It has the same VIN and story, please see below for the emails I received (a price to good to be true I guess now):

The VIN is U5 65 264 066,

o you speak English? I am sorry, but my Dutch is not so good.

Sorry for the late reply. Maybe you are still interested in the car.

I confirm the price of 8900 euro.

Below are some details and reasons for selling:

Situation of the car: The car is in excellent condition, no flaws or any other mechanical problems. It comes with the title, bill of sale, history book, serviced only with authorized representatives, etc.
Other details: cabrio, 04/1965, Blue, 91500 km, 2 seats, gasoline, 1600 cm3, 78 kw, 116 hp, manual transmission, soft-top, leather interior, classic certificate, fully restored in 1995, good condition.

Reasons for selling: I used to work for a company located in Austria. 2 months ago I moved to a new company, which is located in Liverpool , UK. I plan on staying in Liverpool for a long time, and driving here with a left steering car can be a complete nightmare. I haven't adapted quite well, and I want to buy a car with a right steering to fit the roads and rules that apply here.

Also, this car was a gift from my ex-husband. We are not together anymore, and I want to get rid off all his things.

I am in Liverpool, and the car is also here. The car can be shipped or you can come to take it.

I look forward to your answer.

Anna Doblof

am sorry, but I do not know for sure if the chassis was replaced.
What I know from my ex-husband is that in 1995 the car was fully restored (body, engine, interior). He knew all the technical aspects of the car...

You can see in the attachment more photos.

I usually come with business in Netherlands for the company I work. At my last trip I stayed 2 weeks, and that is when I posted the ads. I thought it would be a good occasion to sell the car.

I will come again in Netherlands after 25 September. However, it may be late.

There are also other buyers interested. 2 of them want to buy the car next week. One of them wants to come Wednesday and one of them wants the car to be shipped.

However, you have contacted me first, so you have priority.
You can come and buy the car personally in Liverpool or I can have it shipped.

In case you choose the shipping option, I propose the following solution.

We can close the deal via the services of http://www.bmk-express.com.
This shipping company BMK Express has a service called Safe Exchange, which allows us a 100% safe transaction.

First I will drive the car to their depots.
They verify and confirm the situation of the car (you will receive a tracking number & user name from them to verify this). After that you will send the payment to their company. After the payment is received & confirmed, they will ship the car to your address.

Once you receive the car, you have 3 days to accept or reject it. If you are satisfied with the car and decide to accept it, they will release the payment to me.
If accepted we make the paperwork, title transfer etc and after your agreement BMK Express will release the payment to me.

The shipping taxes are aprox. 400 euro. I can pay half of them.

Each step of the transaction, as well as payment process and the car shipping process can be followed live on http://www.bmk-express.com using the tracking number that you will receive for the transaction.

Let me know your decision.

Thanks,
Anna

I picked a long phrase from the shipping company website and put it into Google search and a long list of potentially fraudulent shipping/escrow companies came up.

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&output=se ... 73&bih=662

Though one of them might be the genuine website copied by crooks.

But interestingly this link came up as well; a website devoted to finding the frauds.

It's all a lot bigger scam than pretending to sell one particular classic Lotus.

Bloody hell! I saw this three or four days ago on French eBay (now removed) and assumed a scam.

I contacted the seller, one "Dana Doblof" and asked why the car was so cheap....it was on Ebay for 8900 euros.

I got the stock response....as posted above but with details of geography and name slightly changed...car was advertised as being in France but then she told me it was in York.

I thought I'd call her bluff, so told her I had an Elan owning friend with a farm near York who could come and look at the car, and could also store it for me.

To my amazement, this is her reply...sent at 7.13 this evening.

Hi Hal,

It is wonderful that your friend can come.

Below are my details:

91 Tadcaster Road
York
YO24 1LT
+447031982265.

I look forward to your confirmation.

Thanks,
Dana

Anyone near York fancy having a look at the alleged 1965 restored Elan?

For comparison, here is her earlier message.

Hi Hal,

I have sent again the photos. Let me know if you have received them.

I am Austria, and the car is still registered in Austria. However, because both countries are members of the EU, and because the car is a classic, the registration in France is cheap and easy. The EU has very good laws for classic cars.

I usually come with business in France for the company I work. At my last trip I stayed 2 weeks, and that is when I posted the ads. I thought it would be a good occasion to sell the car.

I should let you know that there are also other buyers interested. 2 of them want to buy the car next week. One of them wants to come next Wednesday and one of them wants the car to be shipped.

However, you have contacted me first, so you have priority.
You can come and buy the car personally in York or I can have it shipped.

In case you choose to come to York, it would be advisable to come during the week, so the banks and notary offices are opened.

In case you choose the shipping option, I propose the following solution.

We can close the deal via the services of http://www.twb-express.com.
This shipping company TWB Express has a service called Safe Exchange, which allows us a 100% safe transaction.

If accepted we make the paperwork, title transfer etc and after your agreement TWB Express will release the payment to me.

The shipping taxes are aprox. 500 euro. I can pay half of them.

Each step of the transaction, as well as payment process and the car shipping process can be followed live on http://www.twb-express.com using the tracking number that you will receive for the transaction.

Let me know your decision.

Thanks,
Dana

I'm amazed the Police haven't caught up with this scam artist, maybe someone in the UK could send them round to the address I just posted,

probably another bogus address as well. Must much more cars around fitting this sort of M.O.
We all get excited about this little baby Elan, but if it's too good to be true, it is almost certainly too good to be true.
These sort of scammers always home in on the opportunistic behaviour of our species and there's always people that fall for it.
It reminds of a story how to best catch a monkey alive. Make a box with a hole that is just large enough to fit its hand through. Put some bait, i.e. fruit, in the box and wait until monkey shows up and tries to grab the bait.
It will hold on the bait and does not realise that it can free itself by releasing the bait and gets caught in the process.
The opportunistic monkey gets caught redhanded.Genetically speaking we are not that far away from monkeys.

Scammer seems to be waiting for my farming friend to arrive with his heavily tooled-up bodyguards and the local CID.

Anytime would be OK during the week, just let me know 1-2 days in advance.

Thanks,
Dana

When would be a good time and date for my friend to come round to see the car? When would be convenient for you?

Well, guess what? The car is still for sale this time in France. I have written to Webmycar to inform them.
