EN-LIGHTEN ME

Just out of interest what is the reason that the front sidelights (parking lights) have a deflector plate on the bulb fitting and "window" on the lens? I have always fitted these lights with the deflector to the inside so the brightest part is to the outside ....am I wrong? ..... why do they have these deflector plates? why shouldn't the light give equal illumination to 360 degrees?
Could it be that they were originally used on some other car that for some reason had to have a bright side and a shielded side or is there something I am missing
Wise people of elan dot net please enlighten me

Brian,
They came from the TR4 and TR4A and might have been fitted to the last A-H 3000s too (I could be wrong about that bit).
No idea why the shields are there, it has always puzzled me too. The TR4 had the lights in the grille and the TR4A had some hefty chrome embellishments on the wing with the lamps fitted there.

Brian,
You get a better result with the deflector above the bulb and the clear window pointing down. This puts a bright spread of light on the road.
Try it in a dark garage and you will see what I mean.
The affect is much greater if you fit white LED bulbs.

I see what you are saying Brian but they don't fit that way, to line up with the body holes you can only fit the shield to the inside or outside without drilling different mounting holes.....all three of my Elans are like this so doubt all three have been changed.

I put mine with the shields towards the centre of the car so the light shine outwards.
Where can I get LEDs?
TR4:
Edit:
Hopefully this one might work

I have looked at shots of Austin Healeys and can't find any which have these lamps; duff info from the folks at Paul Matty... again.

Not very good illumination, then? Everyone to his own!
I get my LEDs from: http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/ (no connection)
From memory, I seem to remember them being advertised as Lotus & Aston Martin.

Pete,
"I put mine with the shields towards the centre of the car so the light shine outwards"
Me too. I reckoned "front side lights" should aim at the front & side.
(But "shield"? "deflector"? I thought it was a rudimentary "reflector", so I painted mine silver! )
Your link appears broken, so FWIW

Beat me to it, Brian.
I agree, shields to centre and lens to outside.

Hopefully I've fixed the link to the TR4 and thanks for the link to the LEDs!

I didn`t know about that.
I`ve got one of each. I will now change it so that both lights shine outwards.
Thankyou.

When all else fails refer to workshop manual........
"When replacing the lens, note that the fixing lugs are of different sizes to ensure that the clear portion of the lens is always to the outside of the car. "

It just goes to prove that the manuals are not always correct.
