New Paint Job on S2

PostPost by: ceejay » Tue Jun 28, 2011 10:31 am

Finally, the colour is on the body, etc, and some of the fittings
are now being screwed and re-attached to the body.
The corner has been turned with the rebuild, now to get
to the last post down the end of the long finishing straight.

As Paul Matty would say "Bootiful!"
So there are good paint shops other than "Option One"

Good luck with the rebuild; there's a long way to go.

Cheers

Deep and wonderful red, looks really nice especially the gaps around the headlamp buckets. Now if folks would stop ruining photos with this "copyright" trash thought the nice pictures. :?

Hi Mark

This as you know has been a bit of marathon effort, and it's not
over yet, but we are getting there, I will put all of the photos
I have taken so far, and one day I'll put them together
as a complete story.

Sorry piss-ant if the copyright bizzo annoys you...but it is done for a reason,
but not every shot gets the CR treatment, if photos are not copy righted,
or embedded with EXIF data they eventually become what is known as orphans,
IE, no traceable ownership, there are millions of shots on the net that suffer
from this phenomena.
Another reason is that google (And other SE's) like to have as much info
as possible about images, if you google these images in a few days time you'll
see that they will appear in your search results... which is good for me, click
the link below the image and you go to my web site... too easy.
It's just a bit of mild SEO work.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

The flares were acquired from Terry O'Neil of GS Body Works Sydney Aust
way back in the early eighties, The flares took several weeks to fit,
they were not just slapped over the original body work but integrated
into the flow and lines of the elan body both outside and under the
front & rear wheel arches.

Paint:
The original colour was Carnival Red, but I wanted something
a bit different this time, I was keen on Regency Red, then opted
for a stock PPG Dulon Bright Red, (Colour Code A600), then the colour
was finished with A Type Dulon Acrylic clear coat to give that deep
gloss lustre.

About four coats of both colour & clear were applied, with rubbing
back with P800 wet between each coat, yes, it is a slow laborious
job, and a lot of elbow grease, but provides a nice finish once it
is all done. Qty of paint used was about 3.5 litres each of colour
and clear coat.

The paint job was done without a spray booth-oven, which may
surprise some. The paint was applied with a near thirty year old
Arnold spray gun, the 12CFM air compressor was fitted with a good
quality air pressure regulator plus a good moisture trap.

Why Choose acrylic?
For the DIY operator acrylic is much easier to manage and work with
if you happen to have a stuff up along the way, and you can do the
job without an oven/spray booth, but you have to choose the time
of year and even the weather on the day will dictate if you spray or not,
so the spray booth certainly is a big plus if you have access to one.

All up cost was roughly $700.00Aust, covering base flo-coat (F-glass work)
primers, colour and clear over. And that in a nutshell, is the short story
behind the paint work.

Don't be afraid to tackle a DIY re-paint, yes, you need the confidence,
and you need to develop the skills required, but that only comes with
lots of practice painting less important things than your elan body.
you have to work your way up to a full body respray, talk to others
who have done it, and simply practice the art of spray painting, it
is not really all that difficult.

Hi Gordon
Thanks.
You can't imagine how eager I am to take the elan for a fang on the alpine
roads during next Summer.

I have not heard whats in store for the 50th celeb next year, but I'm sure
there is bound to be something in the wind.
What about NSW... anything being organised up there, I remember attending
a great event at Eastern Creek (many years ago) where lotus was honoured
and we all got to drive our lotus cars around the circuit, and later watched
Bondy (Colin) give John D Damer's Lotus F1 (cant remember which model#)
a real good run around the circuit. I believe this great lotus collection of his
was sold off some time back.

True, I am like you (Lapsed & not renewed CL membership).. I heard that there were
only a handful of elans at the Easter nationals at Warwick QLD, the rest as you said
are mostly all later Elise, etc. (Should there be just an elan based club section?)

I agree, elans would look much better parading the F1 drivers than the Triumphs
at the Melb F1 GP, I reckon I'd put my hand up for that, I would have mine well
and truly completed by then.
