Did they scratch the details on the VIN plates with a blunt nail on these early cars?? The VIN plate on my S3 is considerably more legible than those shown here.

I think that it depends on who did it.

My S2 Elan has the number scratched on, barely visable. Some S2s have the number stamped on. The S3 is neatly scribed, and is very clear. The early Plus 2 seems to all have been scratched on with the rusty nail, now getting blunt, whilst the late Plus 2 has the chassis number stamped on, the engine number scribed, and the paint code uses the rustly nail again!

Of the two S2s that I have owned, the one I just sold (1965) had the numbers stamped into the plate. My remaining S2 (1966) has the numbers scribed in, looks like via an electric scribing tool.
