Just been skimming over old road tests to see if Shapecarft has a mention that might throw any more light on this intrigue.
It appears to me that it was Surbiton Motors that modified the Elans and/or 26Rs. Part of that modification sometimes included the Shapecraft fastback top. Shapecraft were a body fabricator only, it would seem. Surbiton offered race and road versions of the Shapecraft Elan.
Perhaps what Ed has is a Surbiton Motors modified Elan/26R?
The car with the registration number SM 1 in the pics posted by Gary was raced by Barry Woods Team Surbiton Motors. The Oct 64 edition of Motor Racing carried a report on this car and provided information on Shapecrafts. It makes the point that SM stands for Surbiton Motors, not Stirling Moss!
