I would like to see the access panel, or whatever it is, between boot & interior.

Any other interior shots available? (high res or otherwise)

Here are a few more that Mr Mazzini sent over.
You can just about make out the access hatch...about 10 minutes work cutting out the millboard and re-carpeting!

I, as something of an access-panel guru, would also like to see what this much-offered but seldom-sold car has.
Whilst I know nothing of the pastime of golf; I would hazard a guess that Chapman's set of sticks would be at the short/special-order end of the spectrum.

That's odd, the window switches are on the doors. Is that an early S3 fhc thing or unique to this car?

I think G...B is refering to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case
.....but that aside I thought the early S3's had the window switches in the door panals....I could be wrong though

In the early parts list it states that the first 100 vehicles (S3 Coupes) had the window switches in the doors and thereafter they were fitted to the dash.

I hope that is helpful.

These door panels are from 36/5520 body number 1289, Not sure how the first hundred ended but 5520 had them, Roger has 36/5526 and maybe he has more info.

Hi all,
The 26 prefix was on the German advert at the start of this thread.

Nice to know mine is one of the first hundred built as it has the window switches in the doors.
I have the official letter from Lotus stating that tha car was first registered in London on September 1965.

"Lotus Elan S3 Coupe original Lotus Prototype and Press car
H&H Classic Auctions Sale 21st Feb 2006

colour Medici Blue
interior colour Black
drive RHD
type Coupe
year 1965
Chassis No. 26/4915
Engine No. LP8651LBA
Price estimate: 36.960 - 40.040 USD"

This is the info that Gino got his info from which I had missed as I don't follow all links posted. It is interesting that the original engine is missing and a unit(LP8651LBA) possibly from a LoCort installed in it's place.

I do have a question too, 4510 was supposed to be the first coupe. This Elan exists some place, at least someone has said that they own it in the last 12 years here on this forum or the yahoo group. Is 4510 a Prototype and 36/4915 the "first production" built?

The Type number 36 was announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965. LNK 120C was first registered on 14 September 1965 (The Type number 45 was announced in June 1966 with the introduction of the S3 DHC)

Looking at the Parts List, it indicates in the Introduction the following change points:

S1 from Oct 62 Chas. No. 26/0001 to 26/3899
S2 from Autumn 64 Chas. No. 26/3900 to 26/5810
S3 from May 66 Chas. No. 36-45/5811 to 7399
S3 SS from Nov 67 Chas. No. 36-45/7400 to 7894

It coincidentally also indicates in the Body section that the Coupe extractor grill was fitted from chassis no. 36/5811

This would appear to point to the fact that all pre-airflow coupes were still Type 26 Elans. However, I very much stand to be corrected by someone who knows this era better than I do!

Tim

The mind boggles as mine is 36/5395 and most definitely an S3 Pre Airflow Coupe.
But if I am to follow the above it should be a strange ugly duckling being an FHD S2 with an S3 chassis number - or am I the only one that seems to have lost it?

By the way, my window switches are in the doors as well.

Another thing that I am wondering, the steeringwheel in te Medici BLue show car is the same as mine, but everybody (a lot at least) seem to have a totally different rim. What's the story? Wich cars have what steering wheel?

Cheers

My one problem is that distance keeps me from my Elan. (36/5395)

Jens

I believe you own an "Elan Coupe".

When your Coupe was built there was no S3 designation, Your Elan is not a Roadster So I would just Drop Any reference to S? any # and call it a Pre-airflow Coupe. I am sorry I sold mine but I replaced it with something I wanted more, another project!

p.s. - S1 when introduced were not marked or referred to as an S1 they were Lotus Elans.

Hi Jens

With Lotus the only thng you can be certain of is total inconsistency in body nunbers versus features

But maybe yours is 5895 with the 8 badky scratched with blunt nail / stamped so it looks like a 3?

cheers

I don't think so. In that case the old registration (it had to be re-registered in the beginning of the nineties), the new registration and the original service book would all have been falsely marked. That seems pretty odd to me.

But anyhow, what's with the different steering wheels? When was what type used? Mine is the thin wooden rim with drop shaped holes in each of the three spokes.

Cheers
