In fact OM is a Birmingham issued number, which scotches that theory! (Sorry  )

Thats true, I had an Elan that I was issued with KOMxxxE from the Birmingham office in the early 1990s, my previous Elan was KUHxxxE that I may have been told was the Scottish number but looking up on google KU is Liverpool so what I had been told may not have been correct.

You will see lots of classics with 123?SC or 999?S? on their reg. SC was never issued in period, so when lots of cars lost their original reg, e,g. to "cherished numberplate" gangsters, they were issued with ?SC registrations. Then ?SC ran out so they have used up other unused ones.
This was told to me when I was pleading with the DVLA when I bought a car where the SORN had run out. RSM949G, a Scottish registration, as it happens.

Hi All,
Definitely agree that it's a bitsy.
All S4 interior the body I think is a 26R shell and not an S3.
handbrake looks like an early plus 2.....no tunnel covering, S4 exhaust, S4 book lock, carb air filter box looks like the wrong one too, boot lid hinges S4, door locks S4 and if you look closely you'll see that he's squared off the corners of the door to suit the 26R shell.
Car looks ok though but would want a pristine and original version for that sort of money.
I bet the engine isn't the original one either !

Hi Gino,

"The past year or so has seen `KOM 371E' undergo a Type 26R body conversion with all parts being supplied by Tony Thompson Racing. The result is a dual-purpose car that can be driven to and from track days / hillclimbs etc or used to cruise down to the south of France in comfort. Although, with much of the hard graft already done a future owner might wish to complete the conversion to Type 26R specification and go racing!"

I thought maybe a 26R shell as well, but then discounted it because of the extra work needed to fit an S3 bootlid? It's enjoyable reading through all these replies, a bit like watching Time Team without that irritating little Baldrick

Gino

It's actually got a Sprint siencer; the S4 had twin pipes - and was noisier too!

Thinking more and remembering less, I thought at the time that the shell was S4. Aren`t the doors different at the front top and am I dreaming when I think that S4 interior door cards don`t fit an S3? Certainly the clue regarding the HRW warning light on the dash isn`t relevant on the wrong dashboard. Whatever, the body and paint was perfect, as good as I`ve seen so it`s well worth my ?15K valuation.

Hi Richard,

Don't get me wrong, even if the car is a bitsy it is still nice. Probably it has gone under the "lens" because of the asking price which i consider steep for the car in its present state.
To transform this in a proper racing car you would probably be looking at another 20-30 grand and at the end you wouldn't sell it at what it cost but probably at what you asking now.

I have a friend who has a proper "podium" racing S2 Elan 185HP for sale at 45000 Euro that initially started at 65000 Euros and am struggling to sell.

Although I think this particular Elan is overpriced i am glad to see that Elan prices are rapidly increasing.
