New Color scheme for the S2

The remains of one strap still dangles from the base of the boot prop on my car. I can recall when the straps were intact but never quite figured out how to hold the cant rails in place with them.

I have the rectangular lamp protectors, one of which I made (I think it was missing when we acquired the car in '67). Don't remember seeing any straps but it's easy enough to make some up.

I have a vague recollection that the folded hood was supposed to fit behind the stay rod but I am reluctant to fold mine that tight.

I have seen a picture some where showing how all this gear is stowed - I guess its time to flip through some books - I have the remains of one boot hinge strap but not enough there for a clue as to its function ..

There should be a single wide strap, going from the right hand side bootlid stay spring bracket to the two boot hinge bolts on the left hand side. I think over there should be a plate to stabilise the strap to hinge bolt joint. It also stabilises the boot hinge to body mounting.

the other end of the strap, its missing the ally spreader, I think that these hood catches are from 4997, they were real bad and I got some from a MGB and the screws and the bells ended up being tossed in with all of the other parts in the can. Its been a while...

This is like an archaeological study, trying to work out how this ancient tribe used to store their belongings. Looking good, Gary. How come your strap has survived whilst everybody else?s rotted away years ago?!

The Elan (26/4997) was in Cambridge, Massachusetts area when new and I bought it with a head in the boot in 1995. It was stored indoors since 1969 (the last inspection sticker on the windscreen) so it only saw use of (at most) 4 winters. I don't thinks it actually saw any winter motoring as its the only chassis that I have gotten (out of 9 Elans) that I would even consider using.

...so the strap should run a bit diagonal offset? Is there a operating procedure to fit the cantrails to the strap?

Yes slightly diagonal, that is how I took it apart, I have never had the soft top in place. Its still in the box I bought it in. I did use the hardtop for a while but without any sound deadener it felt and sounded like I was inside a drum, without the hardtop it isn't very loud (what was that you said?) in my opinion.
