Tall 711m kent block

PostPost by: holywood3645 » Thu Nov 21, 2002 9:49 am

Rebuilding the T/C and using the 711M 'Tall' block requires
different (modified) engine mounts. Are these modified mounts
availiable from any suppliers or is it a weld drill and cut
excerise. Any suggestions?

Unless you have a different chassis the 711M block
uses the same engine mounts. No mods are necessary
although you must ensure that left and right hand
mounts are fitted correctly - fitting them the wrong
hand (or upside down) will definitely give you
problems!

Difference in block size in terms of engone bay
clearances is very small. I've got an SA 1700 block
in mine, bigger than 711 and still no problems!

This is a new one to me - what is a SA 1700 block , what are the casting no's
AFAIK the 711 was followed by the 831 and 831xxxAX and these were the last cast

there is an other block.

There is really no such thing as a "1700 block". They are either 1500
blocks which the twincam is base on (with a .060" overbore) or 1600
block. The 1600 block is bored from 3.19" (81mm) to 3.29 (83.5mm) to
arive at a 1700 cc engine. The deck height difference is 7/16"
(about 11mm), the deck height of a stock 1500 or twincam block will
measure 7.78 " and a 1600 block 8.21". The SA AX block is not
physicly bigger than a 711 block but is does have about 10 lbs more
additional cast iron.

That is exactly why they are so sought after, as they are supposedly
stronger
I've got a good one under my workbench and another with a cracked bore
(long sad story) I do believe it may be recovered with a well engineered
resleeve

Hello,
Can anybody tell me how this SA AX block can be identified and when and on
what cars it was used when it was new?

The Casting numbers on the side of the block are as follows

part number: 831C6015 r34
date code will be something like: 6L95 AX

I don't think that it was ever installed in any regular production
cars except maybe Caterham's. In the U.S. it was sold through there
motorsports department as a Formula Ford block, Short block and long
block.

[Arno Church] Yes

1. The casting no. starts with 831C instead of 711M

2. The casting no. is 831CxxxAXxxx where x are numbers between 1 & 9
I've seen AX blocks with the casting no in two lines below each other
There was an earlier 831C block without the AX in the number. This block
is equal to the AX

3. The casting no is located below exhaust ports 1 & 2 instead of below
exhaust ports 3&4 as is the case with the 711M

4. There is a casting "extension" below exhast ports 3&4 which sometimes
has a drilling for the dipstick tube

Other than the above, the external appearance of the block is identical to
the 711M block

There was an early 711M block with the altenator fixing lugs rounded. The
later 711M and 831C (including the AX has squared lugs

Hope this helps.

The "casting extension" Arno refers to was for an oil level indicator
not used in the Cortina L.D.V. application
I forget to say this block is also in the S.African Ford Sapphire
