Zetec in +2S130.

PostPost by: kstrutt1 » Fri Jul 13, 2001 9:58 am

A couple of weeks ago someone was asking about installing a Ford Zetec
engine into a +2, This months Practical Classics carries an article on
such a Vehicle. The installation looks very neat, the engine is
further forward than the standard installation and they had to use a
Spyder Chassis to package it, they claim it produces 200Bhp.

Does anyone have access to the issue of Practical Classics that Kevin
mentioned in his post this morning regarding the Zetec in an Elan +2?

Today I looked around at the bookstores and newsstands around me and no one
had it. I am interested in doing the same sort of thing in my S3 and would
love to see what the article has to say. If anyone has it and could fax a
copy I would be deeply appreciative.

Thanks in advance,

Richard,

Thank you so VERY much for the article.

To everyone else that indicated interest. I have a Zetec engine sitting in
the garage. I have been looking into this for about 2 months now. I need
to replace or repair my chassis so the thought of going with a Spyder is not
so terribly offensive (money wise). What I am trying to do, from in front
of my computer monitor, is figure out what transmission to use. I think the
standard trans conversion is the T9 (isn't that the same as a MT75?). I
did email with Spyder a while ago and they wanted me to call them to discuss
in detail. I never got around to making the call. But I think that the
frame needs to be modified to accept the changed shifter position of the
T9.

To alleviate the need to move the shifter I started exploring other trans.
possibilities. I had posted a request for some trans. dimensions earlier in
the week so I could compare to the trans's I have been looking into. If
anyone has a 4 speed out on the floor or bench, and wouldn't mind getting
some dimensions I would be grateful.

Basically, I am checking into the possible use of a Tremec 3550 5-speed. It
has a possibility of having the shifter located in one of three positions.
It will handle more power than an Elan will ever see and it is current
technology.

Next problem becomes the rear end - but one thing at a time.

Oh, and by the way I figure that it will cost about ten grand to get all of
the pieces and have the engine produce 200 hp. So if there are any thoughts
of cheap thrills I don't think this is the place to look. It is possible to
bump up the hp on the Zetec to 150 and stop there, use the current driveline
and enjoy a relatively trouble free engine. If you needed a twincam rebuild
it might be cheaper to go Zetec in that case.

Why not use the Elan transmission? It should bolt up to the Zetec.

Ditto above.

See The files section

This gearbox is a little bit of an over kill - don't you think!

My Elan diff lives ok with 133 lb/ft from a modified 1700cc twincam,
although I don't think you should use the stock diff output shafts.
I think thats the same range as the Zetec.

For $10k you can get a nice twincam built, maybe only 160 hp.

I would guess that this would make a very nice-livable combination.

I'm sure you are right on this, just save your twincam to put back in
to when you sell the Elan.

E-mail: ***@***.*** info regarding back-isssues of Classic & Sports
Cars magazine.

BTW , maybe redundant, but I have just recently have just learned that JAMES
DEAN, the the movie Idol, had a Lotus Mark VIII on order. It was in transit
to him the week he was killed in an accident which was to become the public
realization that a vehicle, called a PORSCHE 550 SPYDER, existed and
henceforth became a legend.

Briggs,
The Zetec is widely used in 7 replicas, most of those guys use 40
DCOE carbs and a mappable ignition module, this works out much
cheaper. Dunnel engines in Stowmarket seem to be leaders in this
field.
Whatever transmisssion you uses you will need a new flywheel, Dunnel
also do these.
The MT75 is a completely different transmission to the T9, it has a
seperate remote shifter which can be easily modified to move the
shifter position. It comes with an integral clutch housing and cable
clutch(the cable can be seen in the article). The transmission would
have to come from a sierra, the DOHC and V6 have different bolt
patterns the only option I can think of that would fit is the 1.8 CVH.
As has already been stated you could also use the Std gearbox, with
more torque and a longer final drive the 5 speed may not be needed.

Is it the August issue of Practical Classics that has the story on the Zetec
installation in a +2?

I always thought it was a mark10 with 2 litre Bristol engine. If you have
definite confirmation that it was a mark 8 then I would be very interested
to hear it
