How many?

Ref LBA and ECS.........haven't a clue. ECS changes to EK at times
so could be a batch notation. There is also RK and a number after
some of the cars. Has anybody any idea?

Hi Everyone,

Been on the road all week. If Mike will provide the information, that would
be great. I have not asked anyone at Lotus for the information yet. I have
been expanding the Owner registry to include past ownership history. The
effort is still in the test stage. The new registry will include a more in
depth form that allows a person to indicate dates of ownership and to
indicate if they are the original owner. This will allow the ownership of a
can be traced. I am hoping to have it operational by 1/1/2000. If the data
can be obtained and put in any excell type of format, I then can import the
data.

Hi all

I've been observing this debate about a VIN number lists and other
comprehensive details regarding our beloved Loti.

A note of caution!!

The freedom of access to information is great and we listers are proving it
daily no matter were we are located in the world.

If this list is published what are the risks of certain elements copying
someone elses chassis engine no and other details and creating non-authentic
models????

This sort of thing is not unknown here in the UK and I'm sure that the
development of Classic Car Values has been a major factor in this. I for one
would be very reluctant to publicly declare the birthright of my Elan!

Food for thought

Jeff would you like me to contact Lotus (Mike Pomfret) to see if the
master Vin list for both the Elan and +2's will be available. I can
think about the format over the Christmas break (at last) and set it
up on a link site/ searchable database here in New Zealand. The
downloading is what we do for other customers (gasp!), but it is
within the bounds of reason. Let me know what you feel.

Hi everyone,

I will agree with the concern. The next evolution of the owners registry
will be within a password protected section on LotusElan.net. Privacy
issues are important. The other side of the discussion, is if someone wants
to create a bogus car with switched or made up VINs, it will be done.

I don't know why someone would want to copy the numbers
of an existing and club-registered car. That would be an incredible mistake
on the part of a replicator . . . any existing car would likely have a
better "paper trail" of credibility than could be faked by the copyist. The
real threat has been explored by separate marque organizations dedicated to
three of my Lotus cars: a Lotus S1 Eleven, a Lotus 23
and a Lotus Elan 26R. All are rare, all are expensive and all are
relatively easy to replicate. The threat???? The threat is that in
publishing a list of known numbers, the UNKNOWN NUMBERS can be assumed
and left vulnerable to replication. There is a benefit to the replicator in
that then numbered car can be raced or sold for racing much easier than an
unnumbered car. I can't see where the publishing of
NORMAL, non-rare Elan numbers , like my S1, poses any threat.
