Five speed Gearbox

PostPost by: stevep at bri.hp.com » Tue Aug 31, 1999 6:16 pm

Just wondering if any of you have experience of fitting a 5 speed box to the +2? Kevin Strutt and others have provided me with some information and armed with this I set of for the local scrapyard, so that I could visualise the problem. The Sierra block bolt holes match up perfectly with the ones on the twin-cam (the later Sierra box/engine may be different). The selector mechanism is much longer than on the Lotus box but I wouldn't think it would be too far back. For the U.K. the starter mounts on the left side of the engine when viewed from the drivers seat. This would interfear with the exhaust on the Lotus. Apparently left-hand drive Sierra's had the starter on the other side but finding one of those could be difficult. As the rest of the gearbox looks very similar, apart from a spacer towards the end of the box (I believe the 5th gear hangs of the reverse idler or something similar), has anyone tried the Lotus bellhousing on the Sierra box. If it works it would only mean repositioning the gearstick hole (oh and the trim) and changing the propshaft. Also someone else mentioned that Christopher Neil did a conversion back in the early 80's, does anyone have one of these? Are there any alternatives? Cheers Steve

P.S. any chance of a spell checker Jeff?

Hi Steve,

I have the lotus service letter that provides the instructions for
retrofitting a lotus five speed to the Elan/+2. It will be on the site in
the next couple of days. I will let you know when it is available.
