Paint Job

PostPost by: "Ina&Buc Bailey& » Wed Aug 18, 1999 10:39 am

Hi, I have finally finished removing all the paint from my '69 S4 elan. Well
all that is except from inside the engine bay and boot area. The paint here
is almost rubberised, and due to the uneven finish very hard to remove. My
question is, does anyone have any ideas how to remove this, or any idea what
will cover it?

Also now that the shell, (which is off and completely striped, new wiring to
go back in) what should I use in the way of a primer\top coat combination. I
am based in Norway, but due to cost, tend to purchase most stuff in the UK.
I shall be having the top coat applied for me, but imagined I could apply
the 2 or 3 primer coats myself, good idea or not?
Thanks for any help.

Hello Alan,

The paint in my engine compartment and trunk is just plain black paint. We
have the same year Elan, so yours should be paint as well. It might just
look "rubberized" because the finish in these inner areas is rough. I would
suggest you just sand and clean it, then primer and paint. I just used flat
black spray can paint in my car. I was amazed at the quality of spray can
paints now, and you can use the specialized high-temperature paints from
VHT, etc.,, although my experience is that regular automotive spray can
paint will do the job. I have not used my spray equipment for years.

Painting is one job I have always farmed out.

You must consult with the paint shop that will apply the top coat.
Generally one should stay with one brand and type of paint products from
primers through top coat - they have been tested together. No guarantees if
you mix different types. Also a good paint shop will have their favorite
brand & type. If you take them a body primed with your brand they may say
they won't paint on top of it, or they cannot guarantee the result. Find a
paint shop and discuss the project with them now.

You don't mention the stress crack repairs and plastic filler steps, the
many hours of sanding them, the application of high-build primer and the
hours of sanding... Are you already finished with these?
