Holes

PostPost by: Richy-dick » Wed Jul 21, 1999 5:03 pm

I have just been replacing the heater hoses in my 1967 S3 S/E DHC which
reminded me that there are two holes in the glove box which look like they
should have something fitted but haven't. The first is in the back of the
glove box and is a circle 1 3/8" in diameter The second is in the right
hand side at the back which is a 9/16" x 3/8" rectangle with further small
holes, one above the rectangle and one below, which would probably be for
securing screws.

All these look like they were made at the time of manufacture and none of
them appear to have had anything in them at any time.

Having looked in the workshop manual and the parts list, I find that the
small rectangular hole is for the burglar alarm. Does anyone have one of
these original fitments?

I have looked in the manual and in the parts book but cannot find anything
which might belong in the circular hole (except a blanking grommet).

Does anyone have any info on what this hole is for?

Yes I do have the burgler alarm in my S4. I use it all the time,
unfortunately I often forget to disable it before I start the car
the first time, but the air horn always remind me to stop the
car, unlock the glove box, disable the alarm and start the car
the second time ;-)

The switch is a very common (from the 60s) black two position
slide switch, often seen in use as the AC power switch in radios
and the like.
I don't remember seeing the round hole.

My S4 Sprint has that. Serves no purpose (maybe access to the wiper

My car is original.

Yep, also original, at least on my S4. It is for the "burglar alarm",
and it is *really* simple. As someone else pointed out there is a
simple slide switch that goes in the hole. The switch is a double
pole, double throw switch. The hot side of the ignition goes to one
center pole, and the hot to the horn to the other. The outputs go to
the ignition and the horn, and the other "throw" reverses the
connections.

ASCII art of the back of the DPDT slide switch.

-------
|o o|
Hot | \ / | Hot
Ign.---> |o X o| <---Horn
| / \ |
To ----> |o o| <---To
Ign. ------- Horn

o = Connections
/, \, & X = Wires connecting outside connections.

Slide the switch down, Ignition and Horn work normal. Slide switch up
and they are backwards - turn the ignition on (or hot wire it), and
the horn goes off. I guess if you push the horn, you will have
ignition - never tried. On second thought, you might want to wire the
switch:

-------
|o o|
Hot | \ | Hot
Ign.---> |o \ o| <---Horn
| \ |
To ----> |o o| <---To
Ign. ------- Horn

I suspect that the original switch had problems, since mine had been
disconnected and the proper wires soldered together. I put it back
together years ago, and recently had to replace the switch again
(couple bucks at Radio Shack)...

Check around the area of the glove box. You will probably find the
necessary wires hooked together to bypass the switch.

Yep...

A place to hold the blanking grommet/rubber plug.... 8-)

Now for another trivia:

What combination of switch settings can "turn on" the ignition (on my
Federal S4 anyway) *without* turning the ignition switch on?

The anti-theft switch can cause more trouble that it's worth - The switches
aren't exactly high quality and can
cause trouble in the ignition circuit.

Also, when the switch is in the "off" position and the ignition is turned
on, it carries the current to work the horns.
I'm not an auto-electrician but the wiring looks a little thin.

I don't know whether I would fit it if it's not already there.
Perhaps some previous owner had problems with it on your car?

Anyone know of one in the UK?

any signs of it being bypassed. As I mentioned the hole in the glove box
looks like it has never had a switch in it as it looks virgin. I do
remember though that a previous owner had a push button switch dangling
behind the dash at the driver's side which at the time I assumed to be a
primitive anti-theft switch. Long gone now though.
I would appreciate it if someone could detail the wiring (colour coding
included) so that if I do obtain a switch I have the option of correctly
connecting it up.

If I remember your first post, you own an S3. The anti-theft switch was
introduced on the S4. I believe most people disconnected the switch.
Something about a switch to stop the car from being started being an
oxymoron in a Lucas wired car.

If you want to wire one up the four connecting wires are:

Black - ground
Purple/Black - Horn feed - can connect anywhere in line between horn switch
and horns
White - from ignition switch place 3 to anti-theft switch
White - Fuse box - anti-theft switch to fuse box - hot with ignition on -
unfused.

Instead of hooking up a anti-theft switch, have you considered an electrical
kill switch. For anti-theft, a kill switch will remove the battery out of
the system. No Electricity, no running. Some kill switches have a
removable key. JC Whitney, sells one mail order for about $17(US). Will
handle loads up to 500amps. Most race shops will carry this item, since it
is required for by most race sanctioning groups.

Interesting that. I've just looked in the parts manual and the burglar
alarm switch is only detailed for the S4 not even the S4 Federal.
Were the other respondents owners of S4 or S4 Fed. cars? My S3 definitely
has the correct holes in the correct place. Maybe a previous owner of my
car (for there were many!) spilt his lunch in the glove box and replaced it
with a new one.

Jeff may be right about the switch starting on S4s. My car is an S4

the wires were soldered together (not to the switch) and taped to the
glove box. I just put it back together "because". I'm not sure that
I would add it to a car that wasn't already wired for it. As Jeff
said a kill switch would probably be just as good...

Quite possible...

Regarding: The anti-theft switch was

But, if your car is like mine, you can't get the horn sorted out for
Hell or high water... Then the car would just sit there and do
nothing when the switch was on... Hmmmm... that sure does sound
familiar. And I don't even have a anti-theft switch!
