Twink Starter Electrics - Urgent help needed

PostPost by: Stevie-Heathie » Tue Jun 29, 1999 12:46 pm

URGENT:

Can anybody describe the connection between :

(A) the high load ("big thick") cable that runs from the starter
solenoid

and

(B) the stock starter motor on my Plus 2's twin cam?

What I have at the moment, discovered after a 15 minute rummage under
the bonnet this lunchtime, is (A) with a frayed end (at the starter end)
flapping around in the engine bay. The battery is of course
disconnected.

I couldn't quite see the connector at lunchtime - pesky Webers in the
way.

I need to use the Plus 2 for work tomorrow morning, and want to make
sure that the connection is nothing exotic so that I can effect a repair
this evening after work. I may even get to use my new crimping skills
:-).

Comments gentlemen please.

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

I think by your description the cable that connects from the solenoid to the starter motor positive terminal?

I believe that at either end you need eye crimps to go over the 7/16 brass threads.

<Art time on>

Battery Cone Connector
"Body" | Solenoid
| | |
| | | ___
_____ / \
/\________/\----------------|_____|------| | Starter Motor Earth through engine
| Battery +| | | \___/
|__________| | _ | |
|____/ \_________| |Broken Cable
\_/
|
| Small gauge cable
Ignition Switch (SM Position)

<Art time off>

Having the battery disconnected is only an advantage if you turn the ignition key.

Whilst working on this I suggest you disconnect the thin wire to the starter solenoid. to save accidental ignition switch on.

On a side issue... This may be related to your earlier problems. But it sounds as if your car is rapidly approaching the time where a rewire is urgently needed to prevent an electrical fire.

I suggest you schedule it in SOON like this summer.

Thank you Brian - just the information I needed, just in the nick of
time - I'm off home to get it sorted in 15 mins, and from your advice I
believe I've got everything I need at home.

You are right about the rewire - the car does need it. However at least
I have fitted braided fuel hoses.

I can't yet muster the strength to completely check every connection on
the loom (I can live with no reversing lights for example). However, I
WILL this weekend look closely at all the "big" wires - that is, those
from which a significant spark may issue should things go awry. I must
say I was quite alarmed when the pos cable parted from the starter with
a gentle tug this afternoon :-(

Thanks again for the prompt response.

Steve

Steve,
I'm not sure I understand your query. The cable in question runs
from the "output" side of the starter solenoid, direct to the terminal on
the starter motor. Both ends of the cable should have a "lug" or "connector"
crimped onto the cable.
It sounds as though the cable has pulled out of the lug, at the starter
motor end.
Depending which way round the starter motor has been fitted, you may be able
to access the lug fitted to the starter motor, by diving under the car.
If not, you'll have to remove the starter motor, in order to remove the lug.
With the lug removed, you may be able to effect a tempory repair using big
pliers, or molegrips. Ideally you should do a prpoer repair with a crimping
tool, or use a small gas torch and solder the cable into the lug.

Hi Richard,
thanks for your response.

You corrctly fathomed my question and also correctly answered it!!

The cable had indeed become frayed and worked its way out of the crimped
eye connector at the starter end - I managed to successfully recrimp a
new connector in an hour or so after getting the car up on stands on
Tuesday after work.

Thanks for the advice

Steve.
