More tires

Hey I know that "tires" rolls around as a thread on this list every few
months or so but I've never seen anybody actually discuss this
particular question. Has anybody had any experience using race tires
on the street? If so how many miles did you actually get out of a
set? I asssume a rain tire (with tread) in one of the harder compunds
would make the most sense. Bias or radial I don't know about?? It looks
like there are several brands Avon, Dunlop Goodyear and Kuhmo with
choices in a 155 width that might fit. Yes I know they are expensive
and yes I've already read all the warnings about how one is not suppsed
to use race tires on a street car, and frankly I'm not impressed. As I
have seen it done more than once, I was just wondering what peoples
experiences had been. Thanks, Steve

If you accept data from 35 years ago, I had a Mini-Cooper S for which I
had sporty road tyres (Dunlop SP Sport), and eventually tarmac rally
tyres (can't remember make or designation, but they were the bee's kness
at the time). The Dunlops lost about 1/3 of their tread in just 6 runs
up a 1000yd hillclimb, but might last 5,000 miles on the road (good for
an "S"). The (aha, remembered) Goodyear Rally Specials had unmeasureable
wear on any track event but melted like an icecream in the sun on the
road.
Save a lot of money: use road tyres for the road, track tyres for the
track.
