There is a Smith speedometer from a Europa on ebay that looks the same
as the non-working one in my 70 S4 SE, would it fit and would it
register the correct speed? Thanks. Dan

Crapshoot. Note that there were two speedometers used in the Europa,
one for the S1-S2-Early TC's that used the 336 transaxle and one for the
later TC's. They are identified by a small number at the bottom of the
speedo dial.

The calibration differs to match the drive ratio. I would recommend if
the dial number does not match, don't bother.

I have a working early Europa speedo available. Send me your number and
I'll compare. I'm into this one for about $75 U.S and it has been
cleaned and lubricated. It's accurate to within 5 MPH through 60 MPH
according to my GPS.

Dan,
The europa speedo (& rev counter) look similar to the elan ones, but
I'd guess they are around 1" smaller diameter than the Elan. I'd
reckon your best bet is to get your old on reconditioned - or maybe
buy a known working smiths speedo and swop over the internals, I did
this with my rev counter.
