Anyone ever make a set of replacement-for-stock 26R type headlamp
assembly????
Available, now?

Might like this for street use...

Thanks,
Steve

Try Tony Thompson Racing : http://www.tonythompsonracing.co.uk/.

Not cheap, though!

I have a limited supply of the small Lucas NOS headlamp buckets that you'll need.

I too have been thinking about fitting 26r lamps for road use, probably
with modern 5" units rather than the 7" unit which never did seem to
quite fit properly; anyone got experience of using 26r lights on the road.
my night time driving is pretty minimal, btw.

Cheers,
Pete.

Hi Pete,

I'm also interested in the possibility of fitting 26R lamps for the road. I
was thinking of using the Renault 4 / Elise head light unit and assumed the
performance would be similar? Do all Mk1 Elise have Perspex covers or just
the go faster ones?

Steve

Steve,
The Mk1 Elise did not normally have a perspex cover they are an add-on.
I have been considering using a 5" dipping motorcycle headlight, these
seen compact enough, also the kit-car supplier have suitable stuff. What
I have not really figured is quite how to mount the lamp, presumably one
has to bond in a section of grp, I'll speak with TT about this some time.

Cheers,
Pete.

They were standard on the 111S (143bhp VVC engined) Mk1, though, which I'd recommend over the standard 118bhp 'base' model in any case - the price differential is small, and apart from the extra power, the 111S has a close ratio gearbox and seats that are tolerable for journeys of more than 100 miles!

The Sport 160 has headlamp covers, too, but is a much more extreme, track-oriented car which can be a bit of a pain in the ass for regular road use, TBH.

Martin,
I stand corrected! Hey, why are we discussing Protons on this Lotus
forum? Mr Cocking will chuck us off!!!

Cheers,
Pete.

Not a correction Pete, the 111S and S160 can be regarded as 'special editions', though I belive the first handful of S1's also had headlamp covers, until this was deleted by Lotus for cost/quality control reasons. 111S's are pretty commonplace, though, so it's the model I'd recommend for anyone looking for an S1 Elise.

The Elise was originated under Romano Artioli's ownership, so it's no more a Proton than the Esprit was a General Motors product. I've owned two - a standard S1 and a Sport 160, and I reckon they deserve to be regarded as genuine Lotuses - they are technically innovative (extruded, bonded alloy chassis, MMC brake discs) and the steering definitely has the Lotus family feel. The gearchange feels as though it's a direct descendent of the Europa, too, but we won't talk about that! ;-)

Back on topic, FWIIW the headlamps on my Sport 160 (and those on my TVR Griffith, which also had perspex covers) were pretty feeble by modern standards but remained acceptable. If you don't do much night driving, therefore, 26R covers ought to be OK on an Elan - just don't expect to do any night rallies!

Don't want to spoil anyone's fun, and it sounds like a great idea to
me, but...I think the original Elan's pop-up headlights were a
response to the State of California's required minimum height
dimension, from top of road to center of headlights. On the other
hand, copies of the 1963 rule book are probably rarer than old Elans.

Somehow, I get the impression that no one interested in pursuing the 26R
headlight assemblies is particularly interested in reading the state of
California's requirements for headlight heights.

Later,
Tim

Correct Paul,
The pop ups were to satisfy minium height requirements.
If one was to convert to 26R type lights what would be the chances of the Law ever sussing out what has been done ? I,'ll wager the odds would be very very long.
Do it , I'm looking at a similar idea for my +2 when I get around to completing the project.
Just do it. !!
Given any thought to a 5" hi low unit ?
See ya, Les.

RE: California height requirements.

If you are running adjustable height front suspension, this may not be
of much importance.

First, if you have lowered the ride height from standard, you probably
are in violation already.

Second, if you do get cited, crank up the ride height to the legal
minimum and go (carefully) to DMV to get the equipment violation
inspected and passed. Then bring the ride height back down to where
you normally have it.

The odds of this happening are rather low unless you were running badly
aimed headlights at night and the CHP was affronted by the glare.
