Water coming into the cabin

PostPost by: Bug » Tue Aug 29, 2006 6:16 am

Hi all,

Right now it's raining a lot here in Denmark, Europe. And I haven't
gotten my self a garage for my Elan yet. Therefore the beauty is
parked in the streets of Copenhagen. Now the other day, after a really
big thunder storm, there was around 1 cm of water covering the entire
floor of the cabin. I'm not sure where the water is coming from but I
suspect that it's coming through the crack between the door and
chassis. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know what can be done to
fix this problem?

Regards,

Peter

Buy your Elan a breathable cover until you can get a garage."Peter"

Peter,
Check the drain tubes in the doors to be sure that they are
clear. They are located roughly near the bottom of the windshield posts (
A pillars), at the lowest part of a molded depression. If they are
clogged, water will enter the cabin rather than draining outside.

Also, is would be a good idea to follow David's advice.

Old Porsches usually just leak exhaust gas in with the heat.

Is that why they call them bath tub Porsches?

I had a '61 356B and it was always dry but the fumes nearly killed me.

My 356A Super Speedster leaked both air and water. Wasn't airtight
enough to smell fumes :-) .

My elan also lets a lot of water in.
However, when I put the top up the problems is
slightly reduced. The only way to eliminate it
completely is to keep it in the garage when it is
raining.

The PO on my car didn't install the weather stripping because he never drove
it in the rain. I had to drive thru a thunderstorm on the way home and got
soaked! Put the weather strip around the door and it's a lot dryer. :)

I was at a talk recently by Brian Buckland and he mentioned when he bought
his Elan DHC new he left it out in the rain and it filled with water.
When he phoned the Lotus factory they told him "Don't worry they all do
that"
Hmmmmmm
