Correct air filter housing.

PostPost by: fatboyoz » Tue Jul 25, 2006 6:50 am

My original air filter housing and several other bits went missing
during a house move. I bought a used filter housing, but can't seem to
make it fit. Could someone please let me know the o'clock position of
the two mounting holes on the perifery of the filter housing when the
inlet horns are at 3 o'clock and the wingnut pointing toward you.
Perhaps also a description of how it is mounted.

I have posted a couple of photos of my original air cleaner and
mounting brackets for my 1968 S4 Elan chassis 8555 in the photos
section in the "Rohans Elan" folder.

The brackets were bolted to the fibre glass in the nose about 200 mm
back from the grill on the slope up from the low point. The brackets
were slightly bent so they compensated for the slope of the nose and
the body of the aircleaner was vertical. The centre of the air cleaner
duct connection about 150mm to the right of the car centre line. The
intake tubes were horizontal and across the car with the wing nut to
the front and the duct from the carbs to the rear.

Hope this helps

Rohan,
Thanks for the photos. I have got the correct part, although I'm not
so sure of the original mounting position in my car. I notice in the
manual that they show the housing mounted horizontally, held in
place by one bracket on the circular end and one bolt (presumably
straight through the fibreglass) on the inlet end. They then go on
to mention mounting vertically due to water contamination, but don't
say anything about bracketry. The parts book, however, shows a small
bracket at the inlet end, a triangular, and quite substantial,
bracket at the round end and the whole thing mounted vertically. I
have the large bracket (from Paul Matty), but must have misplaced
the smaller bracket!! I have located two holes, through the
fibreglass(on the downward slope), slightly back from the nose air
inlet r/h botom corner, as view from behind, that coincide with the
holes on the larger mounting bracket. These holes are not parallel
with the fore and aft centreline of the car. When all fitted up the
air cleaner is crossswise, but skewed about 30 degrees with the
inlet horns toward the radiator and the rounded end toward the
front. Can't find the hole for the small bracket and the whole thing
then interferes with where the radiator recuperator bottle will be
mounted. Should have taken more pictures all those years ago.
Thanks, Colin.

My 1969 S4 UK car has the air filter housing mounted in the
orientation that Rohan's photo shows. The only difference is that
the bracket that attaches to the circumference of the housing has
two mounting holes to bolt it to the body as well as two to mount it
to the housing. The bracket has a curve to it & is much wider at the
body mounting end than the housing. The small bracket at the end of
the intake trumpet is L shaped & is bolted to the welded bracket on
the trumpet. The housing is mounted so that the trumpet inlets are
approx on the centre line of the car. The radiator overflow bottle
is mounted directly behind the trumpets. On the other side of the
nose the brake servo is mounted.
