Body Number different

But the chassis would not have waited for the proper body. The body number
is different from the chassis number and always was for the Elans. On the
early Elans the unit number was the body number and the chassis number was
different. On the later cars like my S4 the Body number wasn't used, but was
there. My Chassis and VIN are 45/9185, but all my body panels are marked
7922.
I believe you will are correct that the chassis number was assigned as the
car was assembled, but it had nothing to do with the correct body going to a
certain chassis. I suspect it was more a case of an build order for a
particular color/option package came and the next parts in the storage area
were grabbed, painted and assembled, then marked with the next Chassis
number on the list.
As far as frank's list:
He has said in the past it was information given to him by the factory back
when he was a Lotus dealer, and I seem to recall he posted a scan of one of
the pages which looked a lot like one of the pages in the back of Dennis
Ortenberger's Elite book.
