Alloy Rad

Has anyone purchased a "drop in" aluminum replacement radiator for an Elan
+2?

I have a 1969 "federal" model. It is fitted with the "small" radiator. The
"large" radiator was in the first 900 or so +2's. At least this is what I have
been told. I do not know why they went to the smaller pattern. It is
apparently from a triumph or a modified triumph radiator.

Is the "baby" Elan fitted with the same radiator?

I am making a drawing for quotes. Any suggestions on companies I should
contact to make an alloy rad?

Hi Bob -
I coordinated a group purchase of alloy Europa radiators from Mac's Radiator
in Oregon

produced a quality product at a reasonable price. They were also able to
accommodate some of the variations between models. I also had them fabricate a
custom radiator for my S1 Esprit and I'm extremely pleased with it - the car
has never run so cool.

I've also been thinking about swapping out radiators. But I noticed that
an older model VW radiator is just about the right size. A 78' Scirocco
or Rabbit uses one that's about 23" X 12" (there were several sizes) and
the cost is about $80 brand new, shipped. The major drawbacks are that
the top inlet is on the wrong side and new mounting brackets would have
to be made but those problems are simple to solve. A large aluminum
radiator has got to cool better than a small brass one.



Just a thought.

I bought one from Dave Bean. Talk to Ken there. He put one in his car
as well. Fit great in my '70 S4SE. Was able to retain my current
hoses, mounting brackets, large fan and just add an inline cap. I
bought a piece of 12" x 12" 16 gauge sheet metal from Home Depot, cut
in half and bend to connect new rad to old mounting brackets. Made a
huge difference in engine temp. Dan

Yes, aluminum core with nylon ends. But I'd like to find a supplier that carries these since I haven't actually seen or measured one in person.

Stores like Summit sell Scirocco radiators for around US$230. They're
popular in dragsters because they're light (good for Elan).
Looks like the run about 22inches wide by 13inches high by 3inches thick. See:

They included brackets for a 10" Perma Cool 5 bladed electric fan. I
supplied the fan and it is rated at over 1000 CFM.

My original radiator had a bung for the fan temp switch. They copied that
and the sensor that was supplied with the fan fits perfectly.
