Voltage Regulator question

Hi All,
the other day after driving for about 30 minutes we heard a fast
clicking/buzzing from behind the dashboard accompanied by the red
charge-light (or not-charging light). It would do both up to about 4,000
rpm and then stop. I stopped, opened the bonnet and put my hand on the
regulator to confirm that the noise/vibration was coming from it.
Any ideas, besides changing out the regulator? I know these are supposed
to be adjustable regulators...does anyone know where there might be any
guidelines on doing the adjustment?

thanks in advance,
David

David,

If we're talking about an old DC dynamo generator system, check the generator output first. Then check the condition of the rear bronze bushing and the brushes on the comutator. The regulators are pretty hardy and shouldn't normally need adjustment. The generator is another matter.

David,
Here is a link to setting a regulator but dont waste your time, unless
you "must have it original" take the opportunity to fit an alternator,
probably one of the best mods you can do to an Elan.

thanks for the reply, Roger.
The VR was most definitely buzzing - I opened it up and put a meter on
it and you could see the cut-out contact points doing their dance at a
very high rate of speed.
I bit the bullet and ordered the Dave Bean Nipponsendo alternator kit -
I just hope it gets dirty fast so it doesn't look too out of place in my
otherwise mostly stock engine compartment!
