John-

Seems these are getting harder and harder to find, and once found there's no
guarantee of the quality. Rather than buy a whole car or engine (presumably
to break it) have you considered the new heads being marked by several of
the usual suppliers?

(for example: http://davebean.com/specials6.htm#TCHead )

While certainly expensive, this must be cheaper than a whole car *and*
you're getting a new part.

Regards,

Of course if the cam follower sleeves are ok, the cam caps aren't
cracked, you reprofile your existing cams, and there is enough meat
left on the valve seats to recut them a rebuild could be a lot cheaper
but it's still around 700-750 quid absolute minimum.

It might turn out cheaper to by a Cosworth BDR and have a slightly more
modern design yet fully compatible with the Elan. Power potential is a LOT
higher.

There is also McCoy up in northwest USA he can convert a Stromberg head into
a Weber and completely rebuild and port the head. Suppose to be real good.

Fred, I lost the contact info but I could find it if I looked.

I found my BDR by running an ad in Autoweek many years ago. I got two
responses. One guy in Cleveland had a street RS1600 Mexico brought over
from Canada; it would have been the "factory" spec engine with similar HP to
a Twin Cam but more potential to grow. The second was the one I bought; guy
was an ex-Bean employee that built the motor for a street car but was
looking for money to go racing. Mine is a 1700 Bean spec (Stage 3, I
believe they refer to it as). With 45 mm Delorttos and cam that will spin
up to 9000 RPM and 190 HP. Unfortunately I did not have the cash to buy the
billet crank and special rods that could take those RPM's. I have a
blueprinted Cortina crank which is a pretty reliable 7000+ crank.

Where NOT to find a BDR: I was warned NOT to buy a Formula Atlantic BDA and
detune it. The BDA's were really pushed for power (215+ HP) and the valve
bucket carrier's usually wore due to the fast lift cams. You do not want a
bucket to jam! BDA's also used very short "slipper" pistons that were
replaced every few races.

So the primary source is to find an RS 1600 Escort in Canada or wherever it
ended up and than upgrade it as you see fit. Building it from scratch with
Bean would be quite expensive. If you contact Cosworth they will try to
talk you into whatever they are pushing at the moment, but it probably will
not fit an Elan. They were pushing me to get a YB motor (Merkur in US) but
it is 4" too long to fit an Elan. Cosworth still sells parts for BD's and
Ken Jacobs is pretty helpful; he is in US (NV I think). There are
specialist builders but I have never had need to contact them. The motors
are used in SCCA in FC I think, but these may be similar to BDA's. I fresh
cam carrier would cure most of the F Atlantic ills.

Sources in the UK and Germany should be a lot more common. A 2 liter rally
motor would be awesome in an Elan or +2!

Does a DBA have a similar waterpump design to the Lotus, or can you remove
the pump without dismanteling half the engine?

John Wilcox www.wilcoxengines.demon.co.uk or Burton Power
www.burtonpower.com can supply all the BD series bits to complete dyno
tested engines. Wilcox has the better reputation for these engines,
Burton is just reselling Cosworth bits.

It is something I would like to do one day if the budget ever allows! Of
course the gear box etc would also need some attention.

BD water pumps are driven off the belt drive with a Gilmer pulley but I
believe they are stock Cortina pump housings that just bolt into the front
of the motor with 3 bolts. There are NO aluminum (nor aluminium) covers on
the front of the motor (other than jack those on a Cortina).

The water pump used on the BD series engine depends on the block the
motor is built. Alloy blocks use both the cortina style water pump
on the older blocks (alloy or cast)and a BDT style pump on the
newer alloy blocks(Bigger impeller). The front cover is alloy while
simliar to the crossflow is not the same. They cost about 180 UKP
and are dificult to get second hand. Alloy cam carrier is 1500 USD
alloy block ~6000 USD. Valve springs $800, platforms etc $$$ cams
$800 and up, valves $34 each (x16) BDT pump 250, Lucas CE Ignition
500, Drysump? Look at racecars.com and see how much these engines
command.
I have a fully rebuilt 2.1 ltr BDG sitting in my garage that I have
$20000 it makes about 250hp on twin 48's. It ended up that I bought
a MK1 Ford escort just to use the engine. Even in mild tune a BD
engine It too powerful for an stanard elan. You will have to start
modifying a lot of other things to
stop them from breaking. Look what a 26R needs for just 170bhp. If
you desperate for a BD engine I will
sell you mine for 24K complete, but you really don't want it.
James
PS I recently sold a VGC bare second hand BDD head for $2500 (this
would be considered a good deal) but it was only a bare head.
