I'm in the middle of trying to remove the oil pump, but there must be
some trick to it... I can't get it to clear the frame, even with the
filter off (?)

Can't search this topic in the archives the server may be down.

Any tips would be appreciated.

What started out as a minor thing to simplify oil
filter changes has escalated. While planning to
detach the right side motor mount, I realized that it
is about to break, the bottom edge of the air box is
almost resting on the fiberglass. Many years of
exposure to hot oil is not the best thing for rubber I
guess. So now I'm ordering a motor mount and changing
that too.
It seems that removing the carbs and working from
above would help the motor mount replacemenst.

If its a +2 Elan S130 US version there are 2 methods.

The factory manual recommends loosening or removing the motor mounts and
lowering the engine about a 1/2 inch.

The method I used when replacing the oil pump was to take a set of
medium pliers and slightly bend the metal frame up about a 1/4 inch and
rotate the pump. Remove and re-install oil pump. Bend frame back into
place. No permanent or visible damage occurred.

If unsure about methed #2 go with the factory method.

In simple terms, you must support the engine, and remove the motor mount
bolts so that you can move the engine slightly to the left side of the
car and there will then be enough clearance to remove the pump.
