I'm just curious as to your thoughts on mounting the Twin Cam on an engine
stand. I am used to mounting engines from the rear - having the engine
stick straight out, but I notice that in Miles Wilkens twin cam book he
seems to have an adapter that mounts the engine on the stand from the side,
using the motor mount. Have others mounted it from the rear with no
problems (using the bell housing mounts)? Do I need to make an adapter to
mount it from the side?

Nick,

I've had both of my Twin Cams mounted on a stand via the motor mounts. No
special adapter needed. I just purchased the proper sized bolts to go through
the engine mount stand and into the motor mount holes. I also used some
washers to take up some slack where needed. That's about as "specialized" as it got.

One big advantage to mounting on the side is access to the clutch, flywheel,
and crank. I've never needed to service the motor mount holes!

I have mounted MANY twincams and other 1600 fords from the back. Using the
bell housing mounts.

Normally I can get on only 3 points..

I've done it both ways and I prefer using the exhaust side motor mount. I
took a chunk of aluminum and drilled holes to match the mount holes and the
stand arms since I couldn't get my stand to move close enough to use the
motor mount directly. Using the bellhousing holes means it is hard to get at
the flywheel which is a pain.

I was playing around with some ideas for an adapter earlier. I like the
idea of freeing up the rear of the engine so I can get at the flywheel.
Until I have a little more time, I am going to just leave it like it is. I
want to run all of my brake lines before I start tearing into the engine.

Using an engine stand that supports at the bellhousing holes allows the engine to be rotated. But, having to remove it from the stand to install the flywheel and clutch is inconvenient. Does the motor mount support allow the engine to be rotated?

My stand does allow rotation of the engine while mounted on the engine
mount, exhaust side. So you can work on the top/bottom/front/rear.

Mounting a stand to the engine mounts works great and allows rotating the
engine as long as you have enough distance to the upright of the stand.
Otherwise you can damage the heater valve if it is left in (ouch I hate when
I did that).

Mounting to the bellhousing can allow the rotation to be at the center of
gravity of the engine so it is easier to rotate the engine.

Take your pick.
