U-joints

Does anyone know what the part number is for the 2 drive shaft u-joints on
the early Elan? I was hoping to be able to pick something up locally
instead of having to order something through the mail, but I don't know what
the appropriate part number would be.

Thanks,

Nick

I assume you mean the spiders for the u-joints. If so, I have the
number for the rear one in my paper collection and can dig it out a
little later today. It's not a fun job to replace them, but it's
better than waiting until they fail while installed.

Nick,

Don't even mention Lotus to your local vendor. Tell him you want u-joints for an MGB. All the smaller MGs, AH Sprite, Tr Spitfire, Morris Minor (not a Miini) all used this smaller joint assy. It used to be called a U-50, but no idea who supplies it today. I always remove the cups from the cross piece and add a "fingerfull" of grease, working it around to make sure all the rollers have enough grease on them to stay in place while installing the joint kit. Buy the best quality you can.

Nick,
Where are you?
Roger is correct, the UJ spider is standard fitment to many cars of the same age...
If you are in the UK I can give you the name of a load of suppliers from my days as a triumph owner..
Cheers
Tim

Here's what I have in my "archives" (folder full of papers):
..."use a NEPCO (New England Power Company - now based in PA) U joint
part number 1-300,. It is nicely made and has the grease nipple in
the cap, not at the center (cross) of the joint which allows you to
grease it easily on the car. When you get it, clean out the grease in
the cross and regrease it and the cups with synthetic grease. Then
grease it again when it's assembled (off the car). A once a year hit
with the grease gun (easy with the nipples) means you will never
again visit them."

In actuality, it's a simply but fussy job (DON'T LOSE ANY NEEDLE
ROLLERS). It's harder to get the old caps out of the yokes than it is
to insert the new stuff. Regarding longevity, I can't attest to
anything yet because I'm still assembling other bits of the car.

Thanks. I am in the US (Michigan). Now that I know some of the other
vehicles I should be able to find them locally.

Roger,
Funny you should say to not even mention lotus to the dealer. The
first time I went into an auto parts chain to look for a part that
should have been readily available as it was used on other cars, the
guy at the counter asked me "Lotus? Is that some kind of pick up
truck?"

Nick,
Well, what do you expect in Detroit. Down here, they just look at you stupidly and say, Lotus, we ain't got none a them ports.

Best parts guy story I ever heard involved someone looking for a piece for Oldsmobile's first front driver, from back in the 60's.
And he replied to the poor prospective customer, "Toranado, that's next to foreign auto, and we don't got none a them." He'd have a real fun time being a parts guy today, wouldn't he?

Thanks Art. I called the local parts shop and they carry the Nepco 1-300
u-joints for $10 each. That sounds like the route to go.
