Exhaust System Recommendations?

I would like to replace the original 40 year old factory exhaust system on my S1 with a new system of larger bore. I'd like to know the group's recommendation on a purchasing a new full system. The engine is standard factory compression and cams.

Should I replace the header as well?

Thanks!

Scott,

Check out Bean Engineering, http://www.davebean.com/ , and talk to Ken,
very helpful.
Helped me bring back a 72 Lotus Elan, which had layed dorment since 75.
Prices, quality, shipping, excellent. I make no money from this
recommendation.

I am sure some the Lotus (go fast guys) can recommend some really great
performce exhaust systems if that's what you are looking for.

Exhaust System Recommedations?

I don't know the brand of exhaust of my S2 has but the SS headers, pipe and
Supertrap muffler are excellent. SS means no rust! and the Supertrap can be
tuned for sound you like.

The supertrap is not the most efficient system as far as flow is
concerned. More power is available with other types of silencer (muffler).

Probably not, it is a bit dated, but then so am I and my Elan :) Still with a
stock engine it's no worse than the stock.

I have stainless Steel headers from SS which I like. They came in three
sections so that you can actually get them in the car without too much
difficulty. I then had a stainless pipe bent to go out the back, but I wish
I had gotten thinner stainless since it is rather heavy.

For a muffler I purchased a 24" Supertrapp with glasspack, for three
reasons. It was stainless steel, it was on sale at the time, and it is
adjustable since I was not sure what the engine would want for backpressure.

Would I buy the supertrapp again? Probably not. I would probably try to find
a Flowmaster or Dynomax Superturbo that will fit under the spare tire
instead. The supertrapp is just too loud for the amount of backpressure, and
I think I could get lower noise with the same backpressure from one of the
other two.

I also would probably not use a 2" pipe to the rear, but rather a 1.75" pipe
since that is what the header collector is. I used the 2" since that is what
the supertrapp inlet was and I decided to go up at the header exit rather
than at the muffler inlet.

So I'd recommend the SS Headers which I think I got from Ray at RD
Enterprises. For the rest of the system I don't have enough experience to
make recommendations.

Exhaust recommendations

I've owned about a half dozen S2's in my life and had a couple of them for
many years. If the engine is bone stock, I really like the stock
replacement muffler in Stainless Steel from Falcon (I think in England)
available from many Lotus suppliers. It looked stock and flowed great
even thru the pea shooter tailpipe. It would fool alot of people.

For my modified motors (ie - longer duration, higher lift cams, etc) I was
in love with a system I made up. It consisted of standard Headers in
stainless, but the "Y" pipe was made up to have a 2" outlet. I then
followed that up with a 2" aluminized exhaust pipe to the transverse
muffler. The best part was the smallest two chamber Flowmaster Muffler
available (2" in and 2" out), followed by a standard looking tailpipe but
in a 2" configuration. This flowed like crazy and made a sound that was
just magical !!!!!

Good luck!

Since the original exhaust was an oval shape, has anyone looked into what it
would take to have a pipe shaped, ie the costs? You could use the larger dia
for flow and gain a little more clearance.

<the original exhaust was an oval shape>
I'd always wondered about that. I thought that the PO might have high
centered the car.
