diff out saga

Hi All,
I have been struggling trying to get my diff output shafts out due to
them leaking. Heat, slide hammers et al. would not shift them, so the
diff has come out. Came out quite easily, not the struggle I was
expecting. The question is, now the diff is on the bench do I strip the
whole lot down, or take the cheaper option and just replace what's
leaking? The only seals that leak are the output shafts.
Any suggestions welcome.

Jeff,
No need to strip the whole thing down. Too many critical dimensions
will be lost just to change some seals. Now that the diff is out, you
can more evenly apply heat around the output shaft bosses and have a
god clean throw with a slide hammer. Plan on changing the shaft
bearings at this point.

Hi Greg,
Thought that it might be a dodgy thing to do. I have got one shaft out
with your advice, plenty of heat and lots of whacks on the slide hammer.
Also took your advice on the bearings. ( bought some new ones today)
I don't want to be taking the diff out again in a very long while!
Regards
Jeff.

Jeff,

I can't imagine having the diff out and not changing the pinion seal at
least. If you don't know the units history, I'd also want to look at the
pinion bearings, but it's all up to you. You can replace the pinion
bearings and as long as you put all the shims back exactly where they
came out, you will not have lost anything. You will need a specail
puller or a heavy press to do this and you would need to replace the
crush sleeve. You might also change the oil while you have good access.
