Lotus Elan and Lotus Elan Plus 2 Forums

Hey, all--
I'm about to clean up the suspension arms and mount adj rear springs,
and new coil over shocks. I will run about a +50% spring rates.
Should I put in stronger bushings? What's available in bushings?

IS there a kit of spherical bearings easily installed?

Any parts available to make the suspension adjustable for camber and
caster?

THe original bushings are perfect. Harder or rod end style are too hard for street use. Bushings on the Lotus are so much smaller than any you see on a 'normal' car they are already like race bushings

One issue with any Lotus or British car is oil attacking suspension
bushings. The inner rear wishbone bushings on my +2 dissolved with very
little use. I have new polyurethane bushes from RD Ent. They PU should
avoid to solubility problem and last a lot longer. Other than that standard
bushings should be okay.

Further to my previous reply; spherical bearings will be real rough on the
road. My full race Lotus Super 7 many years ago taught me that lesson. but
she sure was quick!

I have full adjustable fr/rear a-arms with spherical joints and my S3 Elan seems fine to me. And I live in Quebec where we have the roughest roads west of Afghanistan. All this talk of extreme harshness without rubber bushes reminds me of the princess and the pea story.Get a Lincoln!

If your intending using the car seriously on the track then stiffening
up the inner bushing at front and rear by changing to a plastic style
bush can help with handling stability. The increase in harshness is
small in my experience and less than the difference between different
tyre brands.

No specific need for camber and rear toe in adjustment if chassis and
arms is within specifications. I have seen a few people add toe in
adjustment at the rear by putting a acrew ajustable section in the
front arm of the A frame but never seen the need myself. Camber change
with suspesnion deflection is signficant so a small ride height
adjustment gets you any static camber you want. Unless you are really
fussy about both ride height and static camber no need for independent
camber adjustment.
