1ST DRIVE OF THE YEAR

PostPost by: Elan45 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 8:55 pm

Today held such promise, so I drove the Elan in thismorning, and now I'm ready to leave for the drive home on a perfect blue sky 70 deg F day. Some things are just meant to be!

Ah, Rodger,

What wonderful images you conjour up!

Here in Scotland they are still spreading nasty salt on the roads to keep
the ice at bay.

One day soon all that will stop and then ........bliss, the Elan comes out
to play. Wooppee!!

Hamish.

I was nearly ready, the weather was good enough, I was so near to my 1st
drive of the year when.... Just as I was torquing down the cam cover one
of the studs stripped.

With any luck some new studs will arrive today from Sue Miller. If the
weather holds out I may get my 1st run this weekend.

All this first drive stuff makes me glad I live in a kind frinedly
climate such as in Australia. Autumn and Winter is when the Great
Ocean Road South West of Melbourne is at its best. A couple of hundred
kilometres of perfect Lotus road. Thousands of tight turns, a cliff on
one side and the ocean on the other. A Lotus can do it at the speed
limit most other cars are reduced to half that. On an early weekend
morning no traffic and the only place to be is in the Lotus.

In my Plus 2 and Esprit great fun but in my competition Elan even
better. The best time is when I get up behind a big sports bike with a
good rider in the Elan. I can sit on their tails through the corners in
any of the Lotus but when you come to the straighter bits they are used
to running away from any car. In the Elan with 180 hp and good close
ratio gearing I have the acceleration to stick on their tails. I love
watching them looking in the mirrors after they have blasted out of a
corner and see me in the Elan right on their rear wheel. They almost
fall off their bikes.

Rohan,

I'm salivating!! We Yanks, especially in the Northeast, find
it hard to envision a road with a speed limit that only an Elan can reach.

My wife and I went to Arkansas two weeks ago to visit my oldest friend,
and my original Lotus Elan (67 S3)... Gary arranged to borrow a Mini
Cooper for himself and turned the keys to "my" Elan over to me for the
first long drive in three decades, a tour with other BMCA members in
the hills north of Little Rock.

When we hit the "windies" Gary dropped back to give us both a run at
them in true Mini/Lotus mode. There are several expressions for the
grin on my face.

My second Elan, a 65 Gary sold me, lies in parts in my garage. As the
drive progressed my wife turned and said with a smile, "Isn't it
finally time you put all those pieces back together?" She even pointed
out that if I finished the project, we could cross the Cascades to join
those living in "more civilized" climes for occasional events.

As the fun run neared the end, the rain that had been threatening broke
loose. The window seals leaked, drips led to towels coming out in true
S2 fashion.(An S2 body on S3 chassis is a long story) The windshield
fogged and memories came back. We happily splashed our way to the Irish
pub at the end of the run and a pitcher of green beer for St. Patties
day.

I have "Lotus roads" in my back yard, and more just over the hill
toward the Willamette valley.

I started cleaning the garage and messing with those parts yesterday. I
felt a cloud lifting.

A day without a Lotus is a day without sunshine.

Doug,

I'm sure you had a great time. There are some very pretty areas near
LR. I haven't seen Gary in over 20 years now myself. Gary is responsible
for my early FHC being in my garage. Such a shame he won't join us on
this list, as he is a true Elan devote.

I like your quip so well it will get printed and hung in my trailer,
credited to you on this day. How appropriate.

Roger

We have a beautiful drive down here in Miami too... 145 miles on the
overseas highway from Key Largo to Key West. Not too many curves, but
an experience like no other, driving from island (key) to island.
Crossing the 7-mile bridge, you can't see either shore once you're near
the mid-point. Very surreal. Turquoise waters and puffy white clouds in
a blue sky, the smell of the salt air and fantastic seafood restaurants
all along the way. Stop at Ronnie's, near Tea Table Reef, to hand-feed
the tarpon. Best in the late evening a few miles out from Key West
watching the most spectacular sunset going down over the ocean ahead of
you!

Rohan

Spring on Vancouver island!!

Between the April showers I have to suffer the low traffic count on the road with the Elan as well.

It does not freeze here but can get damp a tad.

Drive hard - enjoy - don't die!!
