Elan Hood Pins

PostPost by: twincamracing » Tue Feb 28, 2006 8:10 pm

the aircraft industry has 1/4 turn Camlocs in stainless, no need to
paint, holds up well to scredrivers or coins...Dzus fastners have a
curved bottom of the slot and are best turned with the proper tool
cheers,
scott

I always thought that a coin was the correct tool for a Dzus?

It will do, but that doesn't stop them selling expensive tools to
perform the same job, one of which, if slightly mishandled, gouges a
groove about an inch or so away from the fastener.

Dzus fasteners despite looking nice could be a bad move. It all
really depends on how sure you are that your car won't ever go up in
flames. With a plumbed in extinguisher system it's less of a worry but
I wouldn't fit them to a road car and if they were on a race car I'd
make damn sure they were of the D ring type or could be quickly opened
by a fumbling marshals hand.

If you go to Google images and enter hood pins

You get about 13 pages of pins to look at.

If that's not enough you can enter Bonnet Pins and get another 10 or so
pages.

My hood used to start to come up at exactly 70 mph but not anymore since I
installed the pins.

I got the ones from summit racing for about $10

Stay away from the ones with a key, use the traditional pin and you'll be
happy.

Subject: [LotusElan.net] Elan Hood Pins

I'm looking for a nice pair of hood pins for the rear of my Elan hood
(bonnet) at the windshield (windscreen). I once saw a pair of pins
(pins)that had a perforated metal fin that stood 90 degrees to the
hood, and turned sideways to release the hood. (Might have been on a
Ferrari.) Any ideas for good looking and functional pins would be
appreciated. (It must also work for fiberglass... but you knew that
already.) I'm tired of having my hood pop up at the most inopportune
moments, like at 70 mph.

I am one of those guys who likes to keep it all stock, so I may not
have the nerve to do it anyway. Firstly, I'm going to see about
lengthening the release cable, because that's where my problem lies I
think. But I'd like to investigate my options...
