Good day

I am helping a friend with his Elan starter motor

What is the no of teeth on the starter Bendix drive ?

My memory says it is a 9 tooth, but . I am sure it is the original
flywheel/ring gear and the starter is the Lucas inertia type, but we got
confused with the teeth , he has a 9 and a 10 tooth version availble

Also , what is the dia of the Bendix drive gear, is it 25 mm or 29 mm?

Thanks

Arno

Nine, but I have heard that the original (which mine is) is not quite right
for the ring gear and the 10 tooth works better. Somebody on this list should
know for sure.

25mm.

Arno, you owe me big time because I had to go out to my detached unheated
garage to get this for you at 2:00 a.m. and it's -6 F (-35 C). Let's put it this
way. If I was removing my ring gear, I wouldn't need any dry ice.

Greetings Arno,
The original bendix had 9 teeth and I think Miles Wilkins also says
fit a 9 tooth BUT I had a lot of problems with the 9 tooth having to
replace it every couple of months, I fitted a 10 tooth and no more
problems. There are those who swear by a 9 tooth but I would only
fit a 10 tooth now.
The diameter across the teeth is + - 29 mm and across the bendix
body + - 37mm
Regards Brian.
(PS. I am again in S.A. for a couple of months but don't think I'll
get to Cape Town)

So what is wrong with Cape Town then?

Oh and I was in London for 4 days in Dec ? other than flying in at Heathrow
, the closest I came to Windsor though ,was Chiswick ? for ? an hour

Both 9 and 10 tooth were used. From what I have heard they both work about
the same. The 9 tooth would give slightly more torque, but not enough to
really bother I would guess.

Gents

can I suggest a retrofit gear driven starter as on Ebay. - Over 30 plus years I went thru 3 Lucas starters and a stack of pinion gears before I spent $150 and got rid of the problem.

I must admit that I am not ashamed that I had to go to an oriental solution to defeat that dreaded "Prince of Darkness"
