I'm looking for a good color and appearance match for the OEM red
(lead?) paint on the chassis of my S2. I thought I remembered reading
about this topic before but when I went back and searched the archives
I could find lots of discussion about epoxy primers and paints, powder
coatings, zinc chromate etc. but no mention of the red stuff. I would
have sworn I'd seen sombody advertise selling the stuff but I can't
find it now. Any help appreciated. Also does anybody happen to know
offhand if the wishbones were originally painted at all, and if so with

As far as I know the red color on the early chassis was just a red oxide
primer.

I picked a reddish powder coat that is similar.

The chassis color is a flat, pourous, primer looking paint just like red
oxide primer or that Rust Encapsulator stuff from Eastwood. My S3 DHC had black
painted, semi-gloss pretty much, wishbones. It's a 68 titled car I bought in
72 and nothing on it had been painted but the body. The red oxide primer color
is the same color as on the sill rails I just dragged out of my 72 +2s 130
that were original with rot to prove it--they were still using that red even

He powder coated it with the red oxide color first and then applied a flat
clear coat to make the finish dull. It turned out fantastic. The only
thing I would have done differently was to follow his recommendation on the
color. He had a color chart and recommended a specific color, but I thought
another one was a closer match. It ends up he was probably right because
the one I chose had slightly more orange in it than I would like.
Unfortunately, the color charts aren't exact. When I did my wheels he
sprayed several samples on 2"x4" metal cards so I could see how they would
look. I would recommend asking for samples before making a final color
selection.

I don't remember the exact cost, but if I remember correctly it was around
$225.00 for the chassis with both coats of powder.

For the wishbones, check out Eastwood's chassis black paint. It has a
slight amount of gloss, but not too much. It is also very durable. I like
it because you can buy it in cans for small jobs or in quarts for larger
jobs. They recommend applying it without a primer.

If you watch their site they will have 10% off ever once in a while.

Franklin,
The local shop here can do the powder coat in all forms of finish, flat,
semi-gloss and gloss finish. Lots of option on color also.
Cost for doing sand blast to front and rear frame sections of a mini cooper
and doing all the suspension parts, brake drums and hubs cost me $450. The
only thing to watch out for is any threads, shafts or races need to be taped
off before powder coating or one gets to chase all threads with a tap and
sand all the other areas down to metal again
The finish is great and looks like it will holdup well.

I just completed this on my S4 had it powder coated. I had to special
order the powder and i'm very pleased with the result. I can e-mail
you photos. I had the orginal color matched and have the code. give me
an address you can receive photos

During restoration I had the frame chemically stripped - paint, rust,grease all gone and the bare metal left acid etched for finishing.

I then damn near killed myself applying a VERY TOXIC 2 part epoxy primer (for preservation). You use lots of ventilation in that process.

I overcoated with red oxid primer after the 2 part. It looks as from the factory, and the shiney spots on the frame from the oil leaks still look exceptionally origional.

The wishbones on an S2 from the factory were painted a crappy gloss black. Crappy Silver on my S1. I guess that Colin got a spray bomb deal.

Powder coat them.
