Early S1 Fuel filler, what is it?

PostPost by: mazlot » Thu Jan 05, 2006 4:15 am

As the topic says, I am restoring a very early S1 and am missing the
fuel filler neck and domed chrome fuel cap.

Does anybody know what vehicle these came from ??

Many Thanks

I have an S1 as well. I found information indicating that some of the later
fuel filler caps were used on other cars, but nothing that indicates that
the early domed cap was used on a different vehicle.

Have you tried the usual sources like Bean?

I know this doesn't really help, but I am curious myself to see what you
find out.

Nick,

The S1 fuel filler cap I remember seeing looked a lot like the typical
Morris Minor filler. The Minor may be a slightly smaller diameter. I'll
see a MM owner friend on Thur nite if that looks a likely source. Might
you measure the OD of the tube or cap for comparison?

After your discussions of the source for this, I looked in the
S1-S2-Coupe parts list I keep handy and it showed no difference to the
S2, which is probably wrong. I do have a photo copy of the S1 parts book
at home and if I can remember to look, it is writen in the same way as
the middle book and has vendors and vendor part #'s for that sort of
thing.

I will try and measure it in the next day or so. I can measure both the cap
and filler tube. I would be curious to see if they are the same.

Well over the weekend I was able to find the part #'s in the S1 parts
book. The cap is listed as MA678, which is obviously a purchased part,
but the filler neck is 26L001, a specific Lotus designed part, which is
no great surprise.

home, I have an old Kingsbourne catalog, and it may have a fuel cap
listing, as they were a supplier of all sorts of typical British
standard fittings from the 60s/70s. I'm pretty sure they've been out of
business for many years, but the catalog is a good reference for matters
such as this. Have you tried a cap from an MGB?
