Has anyone installed an electric fuel pump in place of the original?
What pump worls? What's the correct fuel pressure?

I used a Carter fuel pump (3.5 psi)from a VW parts house. Fuel
pressure is key. Mounted it next to the tank with a fuel filter
before the pump and an inline 5 amp fuse. Mounted a switch below the
steering column.

I installed a FACET solid state in the boot of my Plus 2 four or five yearsago. Even though I bought a back -up unit at the same time, I've never had a problem. Had lots of problems with the mech pump. The engine needsto be running to check for problems, but if there is a problem the engine will not be running. The electric pump is accessible and checkable, and easily change if necessary.

Ideally should have a oil pressure operated relay on the supply as a safetycut-out device.

I use a Filter King unit to fine-tune the fuel supply pressure to the Webers at around 2.5 PSI.

Are you able to send me a diagram of how you wired up the oil pressure
relay to cut the fuel supply. This is something I have been meaning to
install for ages but haven't quite worked out how to do it. How do you
get fuel pressure to the carbs prior to the engine starting?

You can see I said "should" ! I haven't actually installed this feature yet. (The road to hell etc etc !!)

I won't do a diagram here, but the way it works is the switching supply tothe fuel pump relay is taken off the oil pressure light supply.

For start-up, there is a supply to the pump from the starter solenoid. I think this supply will need a diode in the circuit to prevent back feed from the pump to the starter when the normal supply cuts in. The FACET pump as supplied includes circuit diagrams for various options.

Most any aftermarket/generic pump should work. Mine is a Bendix unit and I
have a pressure regulator. Webers don't like a lot of fuel pressure. I
don't know my actual fuel pressure, but the regulator is set on #2, what
ever that means. I suppose that might make a nice winter project to
install a gauge at the carbs.

I have a Facet electric fuel pump fitted in the boot (trunk) of my S4.
Remember you will need some sort of pressure regulator as close to the
carbs as possible, I have fitted a Filter King to the inner wing next to
the carbs. Fuel pressure around 2.5 - 3.5 psi. The pump is wired off the
ignition circuit i.e. on when the coil is.
