S1 muffler

PostPost by: mastijo » Fri Oct 21, 2005 4:12 pm

Does anyone have a source for a muffler that has the input and output on
the same end of the muffler. I am restoring a 1964 Elan and it did not
come with an exhaust system. I have called the normal sources and they
all say this type of muffler used on the early cars is not available.
All that is available is the one with an s shape for the input pipe. I
would like to try to make this car look as original as possible. I
figure if I can find the correct type muffler I can get the input and
output pipes made

Thanks,
John

John,

I have an aftermarket muffler on my S1 that is standard for some type of
Mustang. A small, neighborhood muffler shop had it in stock. I don't
remember the manufacturer or the specific Mustang it would ordinarily
match up with. This was about 5-6 years ago so newer Mustangs can be
eliminated.

It is a nice size oval shape, fits well in the original location, has
it's inlet and outlet (larger dia. than stock... but then, anything
would be) on one end and even has a built-in bracket they could easily
interface with. Seems to be free-flowing ... nice sound. It was even
inexpensive.

Sorry I don't have more specific information.

John,
the original muffler on the Triumph Dolomite Sprint and I think on
the Mk4 Spitfire had the pipes on the same end. Looks like your in
the States by your use of muffler, so the Spitfire is your best bet.

Following up on John's request for a muffler source for his S1, I was
able to find the receipt (I can find anything related to my Lotuses
given enough time).

Here's the information I gave to John:

It's a Dynomax #17675 Super Turbo Muffler available online for $58.95
through this website:
http://dynomax.carshopinc.com/index.php ... 231/page/3

I remember the shop told me it was for a Mustang (possibly a Turbo SVO)
but who cares if you have the part number?

Hope this helps others as well.

Hello,
Can this muffler be fitted to an S2?
My parts book would have to be dug out of a pile in the basement so I
am taking the easy route: ask the experts.
It sounds to me to be identical.
What are the sizes of the input and output connections?
Cheers

The site doesn't have a photo or any dimensions for the #17675. Is that info available anywhere?

Also, I have an unused original equipment muffler for an S2 or S3. If anyone is interested I would entertain offers.

Walker's web site for Dynomax Mufflers (www.dynomax.com) shows the 17675 to
be 15.5" total length, with a 14" x 4 .25" x 9.75" body and 2.25" diameter
inlet and outlet. I don't know of any mustang this would fit, since all the
mustangs I know of used inlet on the opposite side of outlet.

Hi Rod,

I would expect this muffler to fit any S1, S2 or S3 Elan. Actually,
although I don't have any specific dimensions for the S4s, my guess is
that it would work for those too.

Stan asked about the diameter of the inlets and outlets. They're both
about 2.25" dia. by rough measurement.

Please note that I am using Sprint headers and 2.25" dia. pipes
throughout.

Hope this helps.
