Adjusting the Stromberg needles - HELP!
Posted: Sun Oct 02, 2005 1:23 pm
I searched the archives for the answer to this but can't find any.
Maybe there is no answer!
I have a 1969 S4 that runs great but very rich (After a 350 mile
highway run from Stowe, VT to Long Island the plugs are coated with
black dust (as well as the back of the car).
The Haynes manual states that the needles can be removed by taking
out the set screw (I did that) and pulling the needle out of the
piston. When I pull the needle it comes out an wighth of an inck but
is on a spring that pulls the needle back in. I don't have
adjustable needles because the allen wrench on the adjustment tool
does not have a socket to go into. When I look into the top of the
piston I can see what looks like a castelated nut or something of
that sort, not a flat smooth area.
The book says the needle should come out unless I have adjustable
needles, which should be adjusted all the way down then it will come
out. No luck.
Both carbs are the same. Ray at Rdent told me to try carb cleaner to
free up the needle assembly. They are currently soaking.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve B.
