Cleaning diffential carrier/case

PostPost by: ngiovas » Thu Sep 29, 2005 1:26 am

I have now removed the grease from my differential case and am trying to
decide how to remove the remainder of the corrosion and old paint. I was
thinking of blasting it, but I am concerned about the blasting media getting
inside the case. I'm even more worried about the aluminum housing and
having media embed itself in the case and doing damage to the bearings, etc.
later if they come loose. Is it safe to blast the differential if I take
the proper precautions to seal the inside? What about using walnut shells
to blast the aluminum clean?

Nick

Find someone to soda blast both items or media blast the steel part and the
walnut shells will also work on the aluminum. The nice thing about the soda
is it will not remove any aluminum.

Nick

I would use chemical cleaners and rust removers. Eastwood catalog will give
you ideas which to use for steel and Ali.

Other than the soda blasting which dissolves in water, all of the other
media have potential of lingering and getting where you don't want them to
be.

It's always worked for me. It also gives you an intimate familiarity

Stan,
I agree with you. I used an old toothbrush and some degreaser to do
the primary cleaning. My concern is that with the iron/steel parts I
want to get the old paint off to privide a good foundation for the
new paint. With the aluminum I don't want to paint it, so I wanted
to remove some of the corosion and marks to give it a "new" look.

There are no real traps for debris but if you are paranoid find a

I think most of us assumed he was not tearing down the whole diff but just
wanted to clean it. I worry about glass beading the aluminum; the beads
tend to bed themselves into the soft metal and then start coming out on heat
cycles. My son did in a Kawasaki motor that way. Maybe your dishwasher
trick takes care of that if water is hot enough.

Sorry Ken, I should have been more clear about that. I recently posted
about rebuilding the differential and this question was just an extension of
that. Yes, my differential is apart and everything is removed.

That was my original concern with blasting. I still haven't decided which
method to use. I'm in no hurry, so I have time to make a decision.

I wouldn't bother going beyond using some solvent like paint thinner and a brush to clean that,I don't think you can ever get all the abrasive media out of the soft alloy. If you feel you have to use this stuff,be careful to mask off the inside so none gets in.The part's underneath the car so why be so fussy about what it looks like as long as it's clean inside and clean enough on the outside so no crud gets in when you are assembling it.Actually I'm sure that some elbow grease and a cheap, small wire brush would get it looking great anyway.
