Lotus Elan and Lotus Elan Plus 2 Forums

My brother in law has a 65 Elan S2.all original. He is looking for tires.



I searched the tirerack and nothing. He is using the stock size. 155/65/13
or was it 145/65/13



Anyways.you know what I am looking for. Anybody have any sources?

I just got some lit from Tirerack and they show a Bridgestone BT70 in a
155r13 for $48.
I think that would be as close as you might find and sould fit,

There is a Kumho dealer that lists a 155/13 made for classic imports often
on eBay.

BTW - For an S2 I think 145 was original standard spec, but I don't think
65 ratio tires were.

On tire sizes, if the second number is not show it is a standard default
ratio of 80.

So:

145r13 = P145/80xR13

155r13 = P155/80xR13

The x is the speed rating where most tires in this size are S rated with a
max seed of 112mph.

If you are comparing various tire sizes, I use a tire calculator at
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. You can enter the original tire
sizes and the new tire size and see the differences in sizes.

It is hard to find 145r13 tires, but the 155r13 still have good
availability.

I doubt if you'll be able to find a 155/65x13 or 145/65x13. I've not
seen tires in these widths with a 65 aspect ratio. Bridgestone makes
a very nice handling tire in a 165/65x13 that will fit on the stock
4.5" wide wheel. Bridgestone RE92, only about $47 at Tire Rack.

As others have pointed out the stock S2 tire was a 145x13 (80% aspect
ratio) and the later S3's had a 155x13.

If you're looking for wider then the widest that will BARELY fit is a
165/70x13 under the S2 rear fenders. Of course every car is slightly
different so this is a general rule of thumb.

I've got the RE92's on my S2 with stock wheels and they clear nicely,
but they are shorter than a 145x13 so I've go a bit more speedo error
and I have to be more careful going over speed bumps.
