Engine hesitating at low RPM

PostPost by: Petter Hval » Mon Sep 19, 2005 8:27 pm

After rebuilding my S4 TC engine last winter and followed Miles Wilkins
running-in procedures , I`m now so far as to use full throttle. When I floor
the right pedal below 3000 RPM there is a distinct 1-2 sec. delay in engine
response. Above 3000 RPM the engine reacts like a scalded cat. Any helpful
advices appreciated.

Check your ignition timing is correct through the entire advance curve, but to be honest it sounds like a carburation problem.

What carbs are you running? Strombergs behave in exactly the manner described if there is no oil in the damper dashpots!

Hi Petter,

Do you have Webers or Strombergs ?

Are you running standard cams, weber 40s, chokes, and jets ? Are you accelerator pumps working ?

You can counter this phenomemon to some extent by going down on choke size, increasing accelerator size/stroke, retarding ignition, or even going for milder cams.

However the twincam is a performance engine, and will never be as flexibleas a Morris Minor. Driving technique can make a big contribution. By "feeding" the throttle to the engine you can avoid the hesitation.

As Martin said, the dampers in SUs and Strombergs are there purely to avoid instantaneous opening of the throttle when the pedal is suddenly "floored"

Hope this helps,

Sean Murray
