Sway bar bushing question.

Did the Elan come with different diameter sway bars throughout the
various models? I was installing a new set of poly bushings on the
lower portion of the sway bar upright (the hour glass shaped bushing
that supports the bar), and the hole in the bushing is slightly
larger that the diameter of the bar (around a 1/4"). I'm wondering
if some of the later cars maybe had a larger diameter sway bar?

I am assuming that these bushings should be snug, not loose. I do
have another set of bushings that have the same exact outer shape
and size, but the hole in the center is slightly smaller that the
sway bar (the sway bar is 0.625" and the bushing is 0.60"). I'm not
sure, but this may be too tight and I don't want to get it jammed on
the bar while trying. Plus it seemed like it may damage the bushing
trying to get it over the end of the bar. Is it possible this is
the correct bushing and I'm just underestimating the ability of the
poly to stretch around the ends of the bar?

Of course this happens just as I am excited about finishing my
rolling chassis (finally!!). I have all of the shocks, springs,
hubs, the steering box and the front rotors and calipers on. I am
anxious to get the sway bar worked out so I can move on to the rear
end and transmission.

Of course, the thing to note is that I wouldn't be nearly as far
without the help of everyone here! I wanted to take another
opportunity to thank everyone for the valuable input throughout the
process.

Sorry if this is a duplicate message for anyone. I sent it Sunday,
but it never came through on my yahoo group email, so I wasn't sure
if it ever got submitted.

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick, Well as no one else has offered an answer, I will. From
looking at my catalogs and books I have found only one number for
the front anti-roll bar. So, excepting the 26R, I would say there
was only one diameter. This may prompt others who know from
experience to prove me wrong and answer your question :-)

Thanks Mike. I suspect that the tighter bushings that I have are the proper
size. I remember the originals being very tight to take off. My guess is
that the poly should have no problems stretching if I use some lube.

I'll second Mike's answeron this one. I don't think there was any change over the series of Elans on bar size. Both my S3-DHC's were fitted w/ small diameter rear springs and matching fronts and larger front sway bars by the original owners. The white project car 45/26R also has a rear bar fitted, but it has all sorts of other 26R goodies too. Did you ever get the rest of your rear hubs apart?

Thanks Roger,
I did finish up the rear hubs. I finished disassembling them, cleaned and
painted them and replaced the bearings. They are now back on the chassis
with freshly painted springs and new shocks.

I am going to try out the smaller diameter bushings I have and see if they
will work out. Once the sway bar is back on, I will be ready to start the
transmission and rear end.

Sway bar bushing question - UPDATE.

Ok, everything is all taken care of with the bushings. I pulled the
loose ones off and put on the smaller ones. They were very tight
going over the ends of the bar, but once on, with a little poly
lube, they were fine.

I was going to post some pictures of my completed rolling chassis in
the photo section, but I keep getting a "group error" when I click
on the link. Is anyone else having trouble accessing the photo
section.
