Re-built engine won't start

PostPost by: jeff jackson » Fri Sep 16, 2005 1:24 pm

Hi Bill, / Roger,
The carbs were just taken off and sat on the shelf for six months. Prior
to that the car was sat in the garage with a dust sheet over it for
three years!
I have fresh fuel in the tank, and I thought that I had some in the carb
too. I used a large syringe to squirt som new petrol into the top of the
carbs.
I suppose that the carb still has old fuel in the float chamber? Even
after that amount of time. I have removed the top of the carb, and the
fuel looks very dark, not like fresh stuff at all. Will remove the other
side, and see if it is the same.
I really appreciate the help I'm getting here, this list is great!
Regards
Jeff

Jeff,
It's probably worth getting a Dellorto refurb kit whilst you are messing
about with them. It contains all the seals and bit that are likely to go
off with age (like the pump diaphragm), also you get those fine gauze
filters with it. Paul Matty should have them in stock, or the Dellorto
distributors (whose name escapes me, but might be Southern Carburettors?).

Somebody said here that the #1 is at 2 oclock on the dist...while it
certainly can be set up that way.that is not the normal way it is done. At
least not on the 5 or 6 Elans I have owned..and the 30-50 I have worked on
over the years.

Haven't read all the posts but most of them seem to be about timing and
spark with some mentions of petrol.

One of the problems with a new engine (I am counting a rebuilt engine as
new) is compression. When the unit was built, was plenty of oil used
when it was built up?

If you have:
1. a spark at the right time
2. valve timing correct
3. the engine breathing through the carbs with no leaks
4. good fuel in the carbs
5. you are confident that all 4 above are OK
6. try putting some engine oil down the plug holes (I am thinking
about a 10ml - no more! That's about a table spoonful). Insert oil and
crank the engine with the plugs out to distribute the oil for a few
seconds. (plugs out in case you get a fluid lock - nasty)
The problem may be compression. I was about standing on my head trying
to get my son's rebuilt engine to start when a chum in club lotus said
to try oil to seal the bores! Damned thing started second turn of the
starter after I had injected some petrol directly into the carb throats
with an old syringe. (about 20ml of petrol each throat).

Worth a try,

Regards

Hamish

Yes, a 6v coil should have a ballast resistor fitted which is
normally bypassed by a lead from the starter solenoid during starting
to give an extra boost. I have a wire wound resistor in my +2 but a
resistance wire in my MGB wiring harness.

Hamish

If an engine has that low compression, it should spin pretty fast shouldn't
it? That would be noticeable, but maybe it is offset by a little drag from
new rings.

As for the oil trick, I recommend good 2-stroke oil; it flows very nicely
and burns off very clean.

Ken,

Fair point but as you say there may be a bit more drag from the new
rings plus the engine may be tight generally after the rebuild. This
the first thing I do after a rebuild as well as squirting some petrol
directly into the throats of the carbs with a syringe. (I've got a video
of Jim Clark. There's a couple of shots in it where the mechanics are
starting his car - what are they doing? Squirting petrol directly into
the air intakes!) That's good enough for me.

Regards,

Hamish.

Dear All,
Stripped carbs down, unseized the accelerator pump, and unblocked the
emulsion tube.
Re-built carbs, with new bits, fresh petrol in the carbs, turn the
key,............
BRRRRRRMMMM! first turn what a result!!
Just have to fiddle with the mixture etc...but the main thing -
IT'S RUNNING!!!
Next week MOT and another Elan on the road! ( hopefully)
Thanks to everyone who helped me on this one, I was in despair, but now
in elation

Hot Dog....

Glad to hear it, I knew when you resolved the problem, it would seem simple.
