Brake pad compound

PostPost by: Petter Hval » Sun Aug 28, 2005 9:52 pm

Hi
I have used EBC Green Stuff pads on the front of my S4 for the
last 2 years.I have no brake servo on the car and the pads fell short
of my expectations, rear weels locks up first in the wet and makes
me a little fainted , and it is probably better to spend the money on
better pads then on a pacemaker.Have someone of you any experience
with high friction pads? I am thinking of something like the Ferodo
DS 2500 or DS 3000 but I do not know if they do them for the Elan.
Regards
Petter

Depends what you want to do with the car. DS2500 and DS3000 were
originally developed for touring car racing not for a lightweight car
like the Elan so despite some marketing in that market they have never
really being a road pad. I've used DS2500's on my 90's Elan and they
take a *lot* of warming up for road use and that's with a car a hell
of a lot heavier than the RWD Elan, the DS3000's will simply never
warm up on a road car.

I've used the Green stuff pads (inherited on a couple of 90's Elans)
and my opinion is they are only fit for the bin! They are far too
inconsistent and just eat discs.

Currently I'm running no servo on my Sprint with a +2 dual master
cylinder and standard Ferodo pads at the front and Bendix at the rear.
Braking is just fine with no tendency to lock up - this is just road
use though.

Some of the Pagid compounds get good write ups from Elise owners so
that might be worth considering with them being a similar all up
weight to the Elan.

I have used Ferodo DS2000 pads and EBC green stuff on my Elan. Both
work well from cold to full temperature on the circuits I race on and
lighten the pedal load due to a similar high coefficent of friction.
The Ferodo pads are more expensive, last longer and are kinder on the
disks but tended to glaze the disks under my racing usage. The EBC
pads are cheaper, wear quicker and wear the disks more and corrode
the other brake components.

Higher tmeperatue rating pads from either EBC ( Yellow or Red stuff)
or Ferodo ( DS2500 /3000) are just not necessary in an Elan in my
experience unless your going endurance racing on a high brake load
circuit. Even then you will have a lot of other problems due to the
high heat input into the calipers and hubs and you really need a
total front end upgrade.

The rears will always lock first in an Elan especially with modern
sticky tyres unless you limit the rear brakes via using lower
coefficient of friction rear pads compared to the front or using a
brake pressure limiting valve or using an adjustable dual master
cylinder setup.

The ultimate is probably kevlar / carbon pads now available from a
range of manufacturers but they are twice the cost of Ferodo and 3
times the cost of the EBC pads. I have a set to go in when my current
EBC green stuff set wear out so i will see how the compare in other
areas.

Hi Petter

I?m using Mintex in front and standard ones at back on my S4 without servo,
but when I get rid of my servo I installed a tandem master cylinder from a
caterham insteed so I would be able to have a proportion valve for the rear
brake circuit. Then braking i?m expering the same as you, locking up at rear
wheels ...but when front brakes getting warm they lock up first...and I can
always do some smaller adjustments besides my seat on the proportion valve
(wilwood).

For my next season i was thinking about to change to EBC green stuff beacuse
the mintex take some time to get up to working temperature at least when
using it for street use.

If You havent change for the bigger +2 rotors maybe that can be worth
trying, I have my thought about doing that but never seem to get my thumb
out.....

Mintex pads I cant remember their number, but bought them from Morgan at
www.bennetsimport.se

There is some picture at my site on the installation

Cheers

On my S4 I have taken off the servo and fitted the +2 front calipers and
rotors. I use EBC Green on the front and EBC black on the rear. So far
the fronts are locking first under hard braking.

I have removed the servo from my S4 Sprint and fitted +2 front brakes
(calipers, & discs), I just use the standard pads from Classicar
Automotive and now the fronts lock before the rears and also the pedal
is much firmer. On the standard set-up the diameter of the front discs
is smaller than that of the rears, which is very unusual.
