Petrol (Gas!)

Hi,

Does petrol "go off" if it has been left for a while? I was trying to run my
elan last night for the first time in 11 months (to take it to the paint
shop), using the old petrol in the tank, and it was misfiring/backfiring
very badly at low revs.

Several people have mentioned this fact to me in the past but I don't know
if it is correct and could it be the cause of the misfire? It was running OK
11 month's ago.

Thanks for any advice

David

I have not had it happen with my S4 but I have been told by many people
that it does happen. When I know the car is not going to be used for
some time I always make sure the tank is near empty. This means fresh
petrol can be added to the old stuff to freshen it up.

David,

Pump petrol is made up of a blend of spirits. The most volatile of these are those which initiate ignition. These are also the ones which evaporate first over time and higher temperatures, not only from the tank, but also from the carb bowls.

I have often found it necessary to empty the carb bowls and refill with fresh petrol if the car has been laid up for a few months or more. If this cures a non-starter, it can normally be driven to the pumps to fill up completely and dilute the stale petrol in the tank.

If this procedure does not remove the misfire you will have to check further.

Petrol does go off but how long it takes probable depends on what
additives are in it, I have heard that the leaded fuel still
available
in the U.K. goes off quite quickly, fuel that I have seen that has
gone
off has been accompanied by a sweet sickly smell.

Yes..you are close to running varnish through your engine..

Gas does lose its "kick" when it sits that long. Either put some more in.or
drain it and put in some fresh.

Absolutely it does. My +2 will not run on the gas from over the winter.

Try feeding it a little new gas to get it going, adding some fresh to the tank, it will probably run fine when warm.

To avoid this, try to put the last tank of gas as cheap gas as practical. It doesn't tend to evaporate. I will run the car low then put a quarter tankof regular[rather than high test] before putting it away. starts much easier

Also, there are gasoline stabilizers that can be added to that last tank of
fuel before winter storage. It protects the gas in the tank and more so the
carbs from forming varnish when most of the gas evaporates. It may reduce
evaporation, but I would not count on that. Motorcycle guys use it a lot
but it is also common to use in lawn mowers and such.

In addition to the previous comments on "stale" petrol, there is always thepossibility of condensation in the tank collecting to the degree where youhave water in the fuel.
It's rather simple to drain the tank. That would be my advice.

As my Elan is a weekend car, sometimes less frequently. I always
add the appropriate amount of stabilzer at each fill up. Since I
have been doing this I have not had nay problems. Before this,
always and sometimes in as few as three weeks. My car resides in
what is usually 90+ deg F. so the distilates go off quickly.

Gas will leave varnish deposits after two to three months. You can
run the tank to empty but this leaves two possible bad effects:
1. an empty tank may begin to develop rust indide the tank, which can
flake off leter on.
2. Even if the tank and the carbe are totally empty there are still
small passages in the carbs which can varnish over and require a
complete teardown to clean out.

I use (in the USA) a product called Stabil (I'm sure there are
others) which can keep the fuel fresh fir four to six mnonths. You
add it to the tank and run the engine long enough to ensure it has
beed pumped into the carbs. Then top up the fuel tank.

Works in my motorcycles, lawn mowers, cars, etc. Everything I have
that uses fuel and is idle for long periods.

Even though I live near New York City I always find a few days to use
the Elan in the winter and the gas never gets old.

Petrol (Gas!)

PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:14 am
by kayenney
To try to put it simply, there are 3 types of gas (petrol) that are sold, but you never know which one you are getting. The first is straight run, which is distilled directly from crude and doesn?t cause aging problems (within reasonable limits). The other two are lighter and heavier cuts, which are cracked or hydrogenated to bring them into gasoline specifications. Bothof these contain some hydrocarbons which will break down and cause varnishing, which will restrict or block jets. This can happen in as little as 2 weeks! The way to avoid it is to add a stabilizer ? I use Stabil, which is available in most auto parts stores, and I?m sure an equivilant is soldon the east side of the pond.

To avoid water condensation in the gas tank, keep it FULL. I live in Florida, where it can be a real problem. There are several additives sold to get rid of the water but they won?t get rid of the rust in the tank! If your car is going to be laid up for more than 4 months or so, you should drain the tank and then run the engine to empty the carbs.

Hope this helps,

Ken

You were all correct. I added fresh petrol and the car ran OK. Obviously
modern petrol must be more prone to "going off" if left for any period of
time, as this never used to be a problem.

Consequently, if you have not been following this thread and are storing a
car for several months, remember you will have to add fresh petrol before it
will run well.
