Petrol (Gas!)

Hi,
Does petrol "go off" if it has been left for a while? I was trying to run my
elan last night for the first time in 11 months (to take it to the paint
shop), using the old petrol in the tank, and it was misfiring/backfiring
very badly at low revs.
Several people have mentioned this fact to me in the past but I don't know
if it is correct and could it be the cause of the misfire? It was running OK
11 month's ago.
Thanks for any advice
David
