Steering Rack Lube?

Any recommendations for lubrication used in a manual steering rack?
The rack gaiters fell into pieces on my TVR 280i. Interesting to see
that. Along with the gaiters went a few ounces of a syrupy, sticky
lubrication. So I'm replacing the boots along with the lubrication.
I've typically used synthetic gear oil for racks. Occasionally I've
used some synthetic grease. On some German cars I've used their spray-
on lubrication.
