Can anyone tell me if the original aluminum hub housing painted? I'm
guessin that the strut tubes would have been since they are steel, but
I didn't know if the aluminum housing itself had any type of
protective finish.

No finish, bare aluminum. Wouldn't hurt to clear alodine it though if you want to keep it looking original and give it a protective layer...

Nope, just left bare alloy on my car.

I have since head them polished to make them easier to clean. Had the
diff rear casing done as well.

Chromate Coatings: Chromate coatings, similar to phosphate coatings, are
processes of chemical conversion. But the chromate coatings are formed
by the reaction of water solutions of chromic acid or chromium salts.
The coatings can be applied to aluminum, zinc, cadmium, and magnesium.
The coatings usually have good atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Chromate coatings are widely used in protecting common household
products, such as screws, hinges, and many hardware items with the
yellow-brown appearance.

I guess the best plan is to clean them and to follow Colins plan. Do not add any finishes thereby maximising lightness.

Alodine is a surface conversion process. Alodine 1200S is a gold color and there is also a clear Alodine, meant to be used under a clear coat. It is available in quarts and larger from paint suppliers such as Ditzler and Dupont. We also use Alodine 1200S here at Telesis as a cheaper (than Anodize), in house applied corrosion inhibitor on aluminum parts. Since I know you are also into race cars, I haven't tried it on magnesium because the two metals are so different chemically, and would be concerned it would damage the metal. Great on aluminum stuff though!

Re, the original question about Elan rear struts: My rear diff housing, gearbox top cover and the alloy parts of the struts on my Elan SS were all treated w/ clear Alodine and then clear coated w/ a Ditzler product 20 years ago. Still look quite good.
